iMac freezes randomly since going to DSL

I have an iMac DVD 400 with a non working slot loaded DVD. This is to explain why I have not upgraded to OS X. I am using OS 9.2.2. I just recently started using DSL and am using IE 5.5. Periodically during the day the computer sort of freezes. I can still move the cursor but can't close windows or shut it down .

Any suggestions appreciated and I am computer illiterate!
