Hello, Chris - Thecleancar.

Do you recommend any Registry repair applications or is it better to leave it to the above applications or of course ‘THE EXPERTS at G2G’?

I would leave any registry issues to the programs you already have installed and the ones you plan on installing. In my experience registry repair programs usually cause more harm then they do good.

Is it now ok to go to Windows update – should I download XP Pro SP2 before the rest of the updates as no doubt some updates are included in SP2.

Yes, go to Windows Update now, If it will let you install SP2 go for it. Then install the remaining ones after that

Can I delete/uninstall the ‘clean up’ programs we used – KillBox, Look2Me etc etc?.

Yes, you can delete all of those programs.

I assume I can change the settings/install the same applications on my other PC running XP Home SP2?.

Of course :whistling:

I have 2 browsers on that machine Internet Explorer and IE modified by BT Yahoo Broadband - will that cause and problems with SpywareBlaster and IESpyad
Can I add the Google toolbar to both browsers?

I don't believe so. You should be able to add the google toolbar to both browsers, unless there were quite a few modifications to the Yahoo Broadband browser.

I’m now left with one query I still have not heard back from BT Yahoo concerning how to download and install their Anti virus/ Firewall so I’ll continue with the two freeware applications – but I still have Norton/ Symantec applications in Add/remove progs which I cant remove, I’ve seen a download file in G2G to remove Norton stuff – or should I just delete everything from Explorer and leave Add/remove as it is

You can try the Norton removal tool, even with it I've still seen some people unable to uninstall it completely.
We can remove the entries in Add/Remove manually with HijackThis.

Delete an Entry from the Uninstall List
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on the Norton entries you wish to delete
  • Click on Delete this entry
  • Click "Yes"

Hello yet again

Still more questions - I'm sorry

Is there any difference between Microsoft Update and Windows Update as both are now in Start menu since I started installing updates

I have disabled the Windows Firewall as I know its not advised to have 2 running
The info on installing Win XP SP2 mentions uninstalling AdAware I assume that’s just ‘Sour grapes from Microsoft ’

SpyBot S&D Resident has been advising about changes to registry entries while I’m installing updates
I cant get rid of warning box The buttons are not complete and one has no title and if you click them all that happens is a tick is added or removed from ‘remember this decision’ only way to close box is click on the ‘X’ then a box to advise change denied appears in the tray so some updates are not installed
Cant see anything in S&D help

Thanks again
Regards Chris

Hello, Chris - Thecleancar.

Is there any difference between Microsoft Update and Windows Update as both are now in Start menu since I started installing updates

I believe Microsoft Update is for the microsoft products, like Microsoft Office. Windows Update is for the Windows OS as you well know :whistling:

have disabled the Windows Firewall as I know its not advised to have 2 running
The info on installing Win XP SP2 mentions uninstalling AdAware I assume that’s just ‘Sour grapes from Microsoft ’

The Windows Firewall isn't very good in my opinion either, you're better off with the other one. I haven't had any users report problems with ad-aware while running Windows XP SP2 as of yet. If you do have problems with it you can always uninstall it later.

I would recommend just plain disbaling TeaTimer while you're doing all of this updating, all of the stuff you mentioned is legitimate. To do that do the following and then when you're done just reenable it.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
Then to enable it just reverse that.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Check the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

Hello

Well I seem to be almost there - Just got to try to get rid of the Norton stuff using the utility as per the G2G instructions. Still no reply from BT Yahoo Broadband.

One MS update wont install but there is a workround on MS knowledge base which I will use.

Thanks for all your help over the past couple of weeks - its been an education I now realise just how much I DONT know about the 'box' on my desk (well the tower on the floor in fact).

I now know I can ask for and almost certainly get help from you guys, as I said at the begining its good to know your not on your own - I will be making a donating to the fighting fund.

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME

Hello, Chris - Thecleancar.

Thanks for all your help over the past couple of weeks - its been an education I now realise just how much I DONT know about the 'box' on my desk (well the tower on the floor in fact).

It also shows me how little I know about how stubborn some computers can be :whistling:

We'll certainly try our best. You don't have to donate unless you really want to, the experience I gained from you was more then enough of a payment.

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME

Thank you for yours.
