Dear bubbles4u35, :whistling:

I was talking to a number of people at GeeksToGo about your thread. I tried to have you do some rootkit scans and have you run a startup list in "safe mode". I was talking to an "Expert" at GeekToGo named "meikiemoes", she suggested a solution to your "popup problem" to me that I will post to you soon, but I'm waiting for an answer on somehing, then I will post it to you. So wait for my post on this matter.

In the mean time, I want you to run a modified version of my last post to you.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

folders to delete:
c:\windows\system32\SBUtils

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply

(Note: As a double check, search for the folder/folders I had you delete through the Avenger application to see if they are actually deleted. Let me know in detail if they were deleted.)

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps.

Dear bubbles4u35, :whistling:

Here is the post I promised you.

Delete the following file: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\nicocituq.html

Then Go to start -> control panel -> Display properties -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop... -> Web tab, then uncheck and delete everything you find in there (except for "My current home page"),

Let me know in detail after performing the above procedures, if you are still experiencing those popups. :help:

You're welcome bubbles4u35.
You were dealing with something new here, it added itself as an active desktop and was responsible for the popups.

Problem should be fixed now. :whistling:

Dear bubbles4u35, :whistling:

You need to disable your system restore, because if you go back in time with "System Restore", it's possible that you will be infected again. Here is how to do that:

(Note: By disabling "System Restore", all existing restore points will be deleted. However, if these existing restore points contain spyware, then you should follow the rest of these instructions).

To turn off Windows XP System Restore

1. Click the Start button.
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. On the System Restore tab, check Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on all drives.
4. Click Apply.
5. A dialog message box should pop up asking you, Do you want to turn off System Restore? Click Yes to do this.
6. Click OK.
7. Restart Windows.

To turn on Windows XP System Restore

Follow the steps in the previous section, but in step 3, uncheck Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on all drives. Then click OK.

See the following link as a reference: http://service1.syma...src=sec_doc_nam

Please restart your computer and then post a new HijackThis log.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps.

Dear bubbles4u35, :whistling:

In my previous post, I had you clear out (remove) your system restore points from your computer. In this post I would like you to create a "restore point". This is how it is done:

To create a restore point:

1. All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
2. Press Create a restore point and press Next.
3. In the Restore point description box, type a descriptive name to append to the date and time.
4. Press Create.

Let me know in a reply to this post when the "restore point" has been created.

I disabled, restarted then reenabled System restore, then created a new Restore Point. Below is a new Hjk log.

Dear bubbles4u35, :whistling:

Your HijackThis log is clean.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Windows Updates:
  • Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. I cannot stress enough how important this is.
Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program <= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall <= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are ZoneLabs. and Outpost.
  • More Secure Browser <= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Hi Rambro,

I have installed windows critical updates including Service Pack 2. I am using FireFox, Ad-Aware, Spybot, AVG, and the Google Toolbar . I installed Spywareblaster, SpywareGuard, MVPS Hosts and Zonelabs. I have to read Spyad a couple more times to understand it, it was a little confusing. I never realized how much protection is needed on a computer until I was hacked. Thank you for all your help in fixing my laptop and for all the advice. I appreciate it so much words just dont cut it.

God Bless
