My fiance was surfing the web as she usually does, and suddenly programs began downloading and installing themselves and pop-ups began overloading her Windows XP system. She wasn't at any illegal sites, just getting song lyrics. I downloaded and ran the following programs: Spyware Doctor (which may have been a mistake, i unistalled that one), AdAware, Search and Destroy, Microsoft Anti-Spyware tool, and I am in the process of installing SP2 for Windows. But I want to get her computer clean before I install that. Everytime I run any of those scans after restarting, things have re-loaded into her system, specifically: ISearch, CoolWebSearch. Whenever we restart, a little blue circle with a yellow bullseye is loaded where the McAfee and the volume controls etc load in the bottom right corner. We we set the mouse over it, a Search bar comes up, saying "Search the Web." No idea how to unistall it, but it is very annoying. Also, we had a desktop picture, but every time we start now, the screen turns to a grayish-white, and when I right-click it looks like a webpage. Any idea how to solve that? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for everything you do.

I did what you told me, and here is my most recent HijackThis log. The blue circle seems to be gone, however there are a few more abnormalities. 1) My desktop background is a white screen, not a picture as it normally is. If I try and right click on it, it doesn't take me to the normal settings to change it. It says the page is an HTML document. Any ideas? 2) When I tried to delete c:\windows\system32\mdms.exe, it said I couldn't and to make sure the file is not write-protected or in use. Any suggestions? I was able to delete all other files you told me to. Allright, look forward to hearing back from you. Thanks for your help so far. Last question, should I install Windows Service Pack 2? Or wait until everything is cleaned up?

Please download and install the program Registrar Lite from here:

http://www.resplendence.com/reglite

Once it is installed, please double click on the icon that should now be on your desktop. If an icon is not there, then check under programs portion of the Start Menu.

Once it is opened, copy and paste the below line, into the address field of Registrar Lite.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

And press enter. You will now be presented with new information in the bottom right and left sections and on the right section, the name AppInit_DLLs should be highlighted. Double-click on the AppInit_DLLs entry and copy and paste the text found in the value field in your next reply to this post.

CoachWife6-- I ran RegLite, typed in the HKEY code ending in AppInit_DLLs, but nothing regarding AppInit_DLLs came up after I pressed enter. The left and right sections did indeed change, but no AppInit to be found, so I could not paste the text found in the value. I did run HijackThis again, here is my latest log. I am getting a huge number of pop-ups, and when I log into pages such as hotmail, something hijacks the page and it goes to search.blank. Thanks for all your help, talk to you soon.

(Just FYI) I have already "removed" all the files you told me to before in the HijackThis log, I think they keep coming back, such as the SearchAssistant etc. I continue to run Microsoft Anti-Spyware and AdAware and ISearchAssistant keeps getting found. I delete it, it comes back the next reboot.)

Shoot, sorry CoachWife6, I forgot to tell you I installed Windows Service Pack 2 per someone's advice. Was this a bad thing to do? After installing it, the system worked fine and normal for 2 hours, then it was back to normal. Any suggestions? Uninstall immediately?

First, follow instructions here:
http://securityrespo...moval.tool.html

Then download and run CWShredder from http://www.intermute...r_download.html

It would have been better to wait until you were clean before installing sp2. Don't uninstall it. We'll get this cleaned up. :tazz:

Hi Coachwife6, I ran the Symantec FXAgentB.exe, it did not find anything. I also already had downloaded the CWShredder, it was not found either. Which is weird because when I run Spybot Search and Destroy, it fins a few CoolWebSearch things, so wouldn't it stand to reason CW Shredder would have found something? My virus definitions are also out of date now, should I re-subscribe, or wait until things are clean? Would installing new virus definitions and software infect the computer more? Any ideas as what to do next??

Run a free scan from panda or housecall.

You need up to date anti-viral or you will be infected immediately. There are some free ones out there -- AVG/grisoft.

This is getting a bit annoying, how weird my computer is acting. So, I go to Pandasoftware, click on the run scan, and the computer takes over, 2 popups labeled: s13.remove.cc come up, and then the site the scan would normally run from changed to Search for. . . Any thoughts? I downloaded the trial version of AVG 7.0, and it said a virus was detected, I said remove it, i rebooted, it gave me the same popup with the same virus name. TrojanHorse StartPage 16.BD. The infected files were se.dll, and temp.frBC6. Should I remove them, or wait until I hear from you? Look forward to getting your expertise advice. Thanks for you help.

Always remove them. Turn off system restore and clean out your temp. files. Then run the virus scan again.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

How to Turn On and Turn Off System Restore in Windows XP
http://support.micro...kb;en-us;310405

Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Sorry to write so much, AVG is still scanning, it is finding system files that are infected, and when I go to delete them, it says if you delete a system file, the computer might not work as well. Should I heal the file, or just remove it completely. Right now, those system files are in the AVG virus vault. They are in the System Volume Information, FYI.

Thanks CoachWife6!
