there is no wt folder in my winnt folder. i seem to recall getting rid of wild tangent back when geeks-to-go was helping me with my original malware problems.

i recovered MezziaCodec.Chl, but it still didn't fix the problem.

well, i deleted those four codecs with the sniper ("headshot!" i like that). rebooted, and darn it i'm still getting that error! :whistling:

i noticed "microcrap" is on the sniper list (#115), although it says it's "ok."

It doesn't show up in the log, but if you open up Sherlock and go through the codecs one at a time you can see the date each was last modified. If you look through all of these and see if you can find one that was modified about the time that your problem began, we might have our culprit.

i looked at the dates, but all i could find was half of them had "last modified" dates, and most of those are earlier than my computer existed.

i looked around on the internet, and discovered a prevalent opinion, that if you have too many codecs they may coflict and cause problems even if no single one of them is bad. maybe this is my problem? is there a way to get rid of all my codecs, clean them all out of my registry, then start over reinstalling only the ones i need? is there a place i can acquire only a basic set of codecs?

That's a good point. You do have a lot of them installed. Since we've been unsuccessful, despite my best efforts, to locate a bad one I'd say that's a good idea.

Start with the ones that you've installed yourself. They will show up in Add/Remove Programs and should be able to be easily uninstalled. Here's a few that I recognize.

AngelPotion Video Codec V1
DivX 5.0.3 Bundle
Elecard MPEG2 Player
Fraunhofer MP3 Codec Pro 1.263 <-- may be already gone



There may be more that you recognize. I do see a lot of audio programs.
I would advise uninstalling these one at a time and then checking for the result, starting with the most recently installed.

well, this has been an extremely pernicious and frustrating problem. i've been scouring the internet looking for a solution, and i can't even find anybody else with the same problem, let alone a solution. i went to great lengths to delete/uninstall every codec i could find on my computer, but still get the error.

a further obstacle to solving the problem: the computer shop here in town, who built and sold me my computer a couple years ago, failed to give me my win2000 install disk with my computer, and when i called them about it they insisted that yes they had given me the install disk, and they refused to give me "another" one. i know to do business elsewhere from now on, but unfortunately i don't have a win2000 install disk to use to repair any files which may be corrupted.

obviously, i don't want to reformat my hard drive, because i'd have to buy another OS.

the thing is, i haven't installed any codecs for a long, long time. you'd think i would've been having this problem for months, instead of a few days, if it was a codec problem. also, the problem began literally MOMENTS after running for the first time those anti-spyware programs which i mentioned at the beginning of this thread--ad-aware, spybot, spyware blaster. which just really strongly leads me to believe one of them must have changed something on my computer to cause this problem. i ran those three programs, then moments later i went to click on a video file, and boom, my problems began.

oh well. i was wanting to upgrade to xp anyway. looks like here's my chance, like it or not.

thank you very much for all the effort you expended trying to help me solve this problem. a month or so ago geeks-to-go helped me rid my computer of a bunch of viruses and junk i brought upon myself, and for that i am forever grateful to you guys. if you have any other ideas, please let me know.

It's not uncommon to have problems with media files. But it is unusual that a bad codec or a bad profile does not resolve it.

Your reasoning is sound and you could certainly uninstall Adaware, Spybot, and SpywareBlaster. I would be interested to know if that resolves anything.

I do have one other idea.
After reviewing your first post in this thread you mentioned that you got an error pop up about windows media player. Then I noticed in your uninstall list that there have been 4 hotfixes for wmp installed.

Windows Media Player 9 Hotfix [See KB885492 for more information]
Windows Media Player Hotfix [See KB837272 for more information]
Windows Media Player Hotfix [See Q828026 for more information]
Windows Media Player system update (9 Series)

As part of the prevention steps that Shaba listed for you in your previous thread he listed that you visit Windows Update and download any new updates found for your system. It's the step right before installing Adaware, Spybot, and Spywareblaster.

Were any of these hotfixes installed at that time?

funny you should mention that. prior to reading your post, i had a moment of inspiration and uninstalled windows media player 9. and voila! the problem disappeared! whew! :whistling:

i'm still planning on upgrading to win xp pretty soon though. but it's nice to have that problem taken care of in the meantime.
