A. You need to update the version of Java that is currently on your system
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9 from HERE
    • Scroll down to where it says "Windows Offline Installation"
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Once the program has finished downloading:
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • Go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
    • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
    • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 CheckedDownloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications
      Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

B. Launch Notepad, and copy/paste everything in the codebox below into the new document, including the word REGEDIT4. Go up to "File Save As" and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files" and save it to your desktop as fixme.reg.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\shellexecutehooks]
"{AEB6717E-7E19-11d0-97EE-00C04FD91972}"=-

C. Please disable AVG AntiSpyware by opening the program and on the Status page - beside "Resident Shield" click on "change status" so that it says "inactive" for it may interfere with our HJT fix.
  • Remember to reactivate this feature when all our work is finished.

D. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {B7173A74-F9ED-DF17-BD19-FD7A95970D95} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\lapwygy.dll (file missing)

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using the Add/Remove Programs module in your Control Panel, please UNINSTALL the following program(s). These programs are either malware or come bundled with malware or they are foistware, i-e programs that are usually installed without the user's consent.

  • Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if still present):

C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\ICROSOFT.NET<==Folder and all its content. It may in fact be Microsoft. If you right click on the folder and it says that it is from Microsoft, then DO NOT delete it. Look further down. Often these Purity Scan folders are found at the bottom of the list of folders present.
C:\Documents and Settings\Joe Chay\Application Data\??mantec<==Folder and all its content. Look for a folder that ends with MTEC, it could be Symantec. To make sure that you do not DELETE a legit folder, please right click on the folder and if it says Symantec then DO NOT delete it.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\lapwygy.dll<==File
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\hsowkyf.dll<== File
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint<== Folder and all its content
C:\Program Files\VSToolbar<== Folder and all its content
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbbqtpmr.exe<==File
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wnsapisv.exe<==File
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winpdc32.dll<== File

  • Exit Windows Explorer

E. Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

F. Reboot your computer.

G. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

OK. Did as you said and rebooted. Upon reboot I get 2 Norton Messages (By the way, I freaking hate all of Nortons warnings. Do you reccommend any other virus protection software?) My Norton definitions are out of date and I do not want to subscribe to another year. Any suggestions? Or should I stick with Norton? If its the best, Ill just resubscribe and bite the bullet....

I did everything you told me to do. The Norton messages were regarding lgfxtray.exe and hkcmd.exe, both trying to use the internet - i blocked both. Below is my new hijack log. Let me know how it looks:

A. If your Norton definitions can not be maintained current then you are going to lose again and again. You don't have a chance on the net.

B. I had Norton before but changed because these suites are so resource hungry. The use up all your available resources. This statement of mine would apply to McAfee Suites also for me.

C. Until you decide on other products (AV and Firewall) I would download AVG7 Free and ZoneAlarm Free (links to both can be found in my signature block) . Unplug from the net completely and uninstall all of Symantec then install the 2 programs in question. Get back on line and update the 2 new progs and run AVG7 Free and let it remove everything it finds.

D. Myself, I use Kaspersky and ZoneAlarm free. Many of my colleagues prefer NOD32 which is even less resource hungry than Kaspersky.

E. There is a file in your log of which I am unsure. For that reason, I need you to submit it to Jotti's for analysis.

1. Click HERE to get to Jotti's site.

2. At the top of the Jotti window, use the Browse button to locate the following file on your system:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winpdc32.dll

3. Once you have located the file, click SUBMIT and the content of the file will be uploaded by the site and analysed.

4. Please provide me with the results of the analysis.

F. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner (Use Internet Explorer as your Browser)

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE YO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Next Click on Free Virus Scanner, then Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Standard
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information into your next post.
G. Reports/logs to Post:
  • Jotti's Report
  • Kaspersky Report

Im an idiot!!! I totally forgot to tell you last post that when I tried to do a manual delete of this file (winpdc32.dll) I was unsuccessful. The computer told me the file could not be deleted I think because it was in use. I was meaning to write that in my previous post but I forgot!! I also couldnt find some of the other files you had listed, but Im assuming this was due to the fact that they have already been deleted. Anyhow, Im gathering the information you requested...

The Kaspersky log that you posted is what is required. There is but one infected file on your system that has not been quarantined by one program or another.

A. Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note:In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
B. Please RUN HijackThis.
  • . Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside the following item:

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winpdc32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winpdc32.dll

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.
C. Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select
    • "Delete on Reboot
    • Then click on the "All Files" button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winpdc32.dll

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

D. Please run HJT again, click Scan, produce a log and post it in your reply.

Regards,

Trevuren

OK, I did as you said and all seems ok. The new Hijack This log is posted below. I do have one question for you, Trevuren. When the computer starts, always, now and before, I get a address read violation error from WUSB54GS.exe. This is the program that I use for my linksys wireless usb to connect to my linksys wireless router. Do you know how I can make this error go away? If you need me to give you the specific hexidec. location of the address read error in the file I can reboot and write you the exact error.

Other than that, how does the log look?

THANKS AGAIN!!!

Joe

Your system is telling you that it cannot find a file that it deems necessary to run a certain application/service on your system. If you look at your HJT log, in the section of the 023 entries, you will find the following:

O23 - Service: WUSB54GSSVC - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Linksys Wireless-G USB Wireless Network Monitor\WLService.exe" "WUSB54GS.exe (file missing)

This would seem to indicate that the file is missing and would explain your problem. However, if you look in the upper part of the HJT log, you will see the following:

C:\Program Files\Linksys Wireless-G USB Wireless Network Monitor\WUSB54GS.exe

among the running processes which clearly shows that the file does indeed exist. This situation is not uncommon with HJT. It occurs when HJT looks for a file that it thinks should be in a certain location and does not find it because it is indeed located elsewhere where HJT is not programmed to look. The problem is often resolved by reinstalling the software.

Please provide the entire content of the error message to enable me to make a proper diagnosis.

A. Please disable AVG AntiSpyware by opening the program and on the Status page - beside "Resident Shield" click on "change status" so that it says "inactive" for it may interfere with our HJT fix.
  • Remember to reactivate this feature when all our work is finished.

B. Please RUN HijackThis
  • Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winpdc32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winpdc32.dll

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in this thread so we can check how everything looks now. In addition, please tell me if there are any more malware problems that you are aware of.
Regards,

Trevuren

OK did as you said and all seems ok. A new Hijack log is below. The error does not happen anymore at startup, so I guess maybe the problem fixed itself??

Anyhow, let me know how the log looks, but I think you did a great job of getting all the stuff off my computer. A donation is deffinetely in order.....
