Here is a video from "How it is made" on the Discovery Channel on the making of fiber optic cable.

Verizon has a very large fiber back backbone network and even in smaller markets is offering 30mbps down with 15mbps up at near the price of cable in the same markets. With tiered service in these markets Verizon offers faster service at lower prices then other vendors in the market. This is the benefits of a fiber optic cable.

Many Telcoms have invested into fiber networks. Larger markets like Miami, Atlanta, San Fransisco, and L.A. have extensive fiber networks that deliver fiber connections to the consumer.

To see fiber-optics most widely used applications look at the Japanese and South Koreans where many consumers have 100mbps both ways and pay less in a year than the average broadband consumer in the USA pays a month for less than a tenth of the speed.

Combine fiber with the latest in wireless technology and the broadband delivery of data technologies will only get more accessible to the average consumer.

Oh, did I mention Broadband over Powerline .
