Downloader Virus

I've contracted a virus that according to Norton is called downloader. I googled it, followed the instructions to get rid of it with no luck. When I ran the virus scan as per the instructions the virus didn't even show up but it is still there. It's in a temp internet file - I have the name of the file. What can I do? Thanks for any help.
