The problem started when I noticed that a program called Malaware Scan (or something like that, I know it began with Malaware) was all of a sudden downloaded and running on my computer. I did not authorize this program to install so I have no idea how it got there. Before I uninstalled it a very annoying window popped up over and over saying that "Viruses may be on your computer! You should purchase the full version of Malaware to remove them!" and so on and so on. Pretty cliche stuff. There was even a Malaware icon on my desktop that looked like one of those alarms that you see in fire stations. When I went to uninstall the unwanted program I had a very difficult time. It did not want to uninstall until I purchased a lisence from them. I did no such thing and managed to uninstall it. I do not know exactly how I did it but it was no longer in my programs list. Now...before all of this happened, before the annoying pop up window started showing up, my background went from a pretty mountain scene to all black. Down at the very bottom of the screen a little bubble from Windows said that a program was running that required the background to be changed in order for it to run properly and that as soon as the program was exited the background would return to normal. So like I said before, I then uninstalled the Malaware program thinking that was probably the problem but even after I uninstalled it and shut down my computer the background is still pitch black. I am able to change the color of the background but only to an ugly solid color. When I try to change it to a picture or other pretty background the computer ignores me. I have tried going to task manager and seeing if there were any background programs running but there are none. I have no idea what is going on!! Nothing else is wrong with the computer. I just bought it mabey a month and a half ago so I am very frustrated. I have tried everything that I can personally think of to fix the problem but nothing has worked. PLEASE HELP. I miss my background. :whistling: By the way my OS is Vista.

Hi athalae777...

Please go to the Malware Forum and follow the instructions you'll find there.

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- post a hijackthis log in THAT forum. Do Not reply to or "bump" your own topic...if it shows a reply, it may be overlooked as one that is being worked on.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.
