I have an older HP Vectra running windows 98 and starting this past Sunday if I try to boot it starts booting and part way through it reboots and brings up the safe mode option screen. I did line by line confirmations and have narrowed it down to the ndis.vxd. If I do not allow that to load I will boot yet most things such as external drives and modems will not work. The patch appears to be in and working (fast shutdown is off). I have a few files that I really do not want to lose. I did try to use a memory stick on this unit yet when plugging it in on Saturday it was a non compatible device. HELP!

It sounds like your hard drive may be failing and it's time to back up your files. A 120gb or smaller external hard drive, or if you're handy an internal one, might be what you need. You could run diagnostics on the drive to find out but using it any more than you have to before you know may be putting it at risk.

I would suspect a conflict and not the hard drive.

Thanks Whiskey I agree. I am leaning towards a problem trying to use a travel drive that will not operate with 98. I have everything disconnected and when I do boot without ndis.vxd it is still looking for a new divice that 98 does not have. Is it possible 98 is still trying to install something that is not there. Can I get rid of it somehow. Thanks JJ

Take a look in Device Manager to see if there are any errors. You may have a corrupted attempt to install the external drive. If it is listed in Device Manager remove it.
