Sorry for the delay.

The easiest way is to right click your c: Drive select properties then tools and click "Check Now". Make sure both boxes are checked.

click start a pop-up will tell you it cannot do the check now and ask if you want to do it the next time you restart your machine. click yes then restart.

Remember this will take some time...1-2 hours is possible depending on drive size, usage and errors it encounters.

I've done chkdsk and wasn't looking when the results came up and now it's rebooted. Where do I go to find the results?

In XP, open the Control Panel, double click on "Adminstrative Tools"
double click on "Event Viewer"

then click on "Application"

In the "Source" column, look for the "Winlogon" item. Double click it and you should see the results of your Chkdsk.

Monkey, I've done the Speedfan thingy and can't download the screenshot for some reason. What info do you need and I'll relay it to you.

How's this
[attachment=14502:SMART_stats_2.rtf]
Last two lines are not in screenschot (the enlarge page was greyed out) and are as follows:
UltraATA CRC Error Rate 200 200 0 000000000000
(Unknown Attribute) 100 100 0 000000000000 This Attribute also has the green OK sign in front of it.

Oh, and the notebook had another seizure last night. My son was using Open Office and also playing music and he fell asleep and when he awoke half an hour later the screen was saying that the OS couldn't be found. It also had "Media test failure. Check cable. Intel ® Boot Agent Version 4.1.07". I turned it off and let it cool down for about half an hour and he started it and it did a check disk and then was OK.

I await your learned advice. :whistling:

the drive doesn't seem to be reporting it's own death....maybe it's best not to know before you go?

all the symptoms you're describing SOUND like something's wrong with the hard drive...but it could be other thermal problems....see if you can get a screenshot of the first page of speedfan

do you have all the system disks for the laptop? like...everything you'd need to reinstall the operating system? (there's a good chance you don't...and that this thing was designed to be restored from a restore partition...in which case.....some specialness might need to be done)
