If I hadn't tried for days and days to fix this problem... i wouldn't be sending this to you now. I'm running a dell dimension 8200, P4 2.2 GHZ, w/512 MB ram with windows XP pro(actually its corporate edition) w/ SP1 and an NVIDIA GForce4 MX 420. When I try to open Task Manager in windows I can see the icon in the tray, but you can't click on it or do anything, and the Task Manager window never opens. Sometimes randomly it works, but its rare. It does work if i open it quickly when restarting in safe mode.
Also, If i type in "www.google.com" in IE and hit enter, it doesn't do anything, but if I type in "http://www.google.com" it works. FTP in ie doesn't work. I'm really confused about what to do , since I've run the latest Symantec virus scan and found nothing. I've run the latest Spybot and Ad-Aware and found nothing. I ran a trend-micro online scan and found nothing. So then I tried running a bunch of the symantec removal tools for virus' that have disabling task manager as a symptom. Nothing worked. So I got frustrated and said the heck with it... and REFORMATTED.
However, after reformatting, I still have the same exact problem. Sometimes IE fails to work at all... and seeing as how i'm connected to a campus LAN, that shouldn't be a problem. The only other clue i have is that I ran out of virutal memory a while back.. (probably because of whatever virus).. but i haven't had the problem in two weeks.
Any help that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. I've provided my HijackThis log, so hopefully someone who knows better than I can find something.
