I think i had something like that. When i started up my PC, it just showed the desktop and all i could do is open the task manager.. i found the best thing to do was just restart it via the task manager.
Now i have moved my PC it has stopped doing this *touch wood* so it may just be that it is not suited to the location it is in as dust might be getting everywhere!
Not sure how to solve this one but it should settle down eventually if you don't find an immediate solution.

It has been recently noted that many (most?) of these "missing explorer" problems are due to quite serious malware. I suggest that you follow the instructions here: http://www.geekstogo...-Log-t2852.html
Then post a HiJackThis log here: http://www.geekstogo...o-Here-f37.html
Please do not post a HJT log anywhere else unless asked.
Sometimes explorer does just fail to load without malware as a cause. If this is the case for you, explorer should start up and run (display Taskbar and Start Menu) when you open Taskmanager and select File>New Task(Run), type in explorer.exe and press OK. If that does not do the trick, you may wish to see if explorer works in any other accounts, and/or Safe Mode.
But in most of these cases recently, malware is the problem.
