Sorry JakeMC,
I should have given instruction on how to get that list.
Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Good to hear we are making progress.

The laptop has improved a lot so I can now use it to communicate instead of just copying and pasting. I had been using my PC to open and read your responses. Since startup is very slow also, I included a HJT startup list in case there is something in that. If you want, advise me when you think that this laptop should be in good working order and I'll give some of the programs a try.

Hey Jake,
Give me a bit to review this whole thing again, I still think I am missing something.
Running GMER to completion and the log from that would be a plus :)

I'm answering from my PC. The first time I tried gmer it crashed as above. I tried to run it again and when it looked like it was done I clicked save. The laptop then shutdown. I ran it a third time without the network cable hooked up. When it looked like it was done I clicked on 'copy' hoping to get the results on the clipboard. The computer then shut itself down. So maybe whatever garbage is left on the laptop caused this?

Hi JakeMC,
I think you are correct in thnking whatever junk is in there might be causing this problem. Lets do a couple of things.
First, delete GMER from your laptop. It is possible that the program itself has been damaged.
Run ATF cleaner again.

Next, lets try a different scanner:
Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
  • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.
Final scan tool:
Please download Rootkit Revealer (link is at the very bottom of the page)
  • Unzip it to your desktop.
  • Open the rootkitrevealer folder and double-click rootkitrevealer.exe
  • Close ALL windows and programs and do nothing on the pc while the scan runs. This includes games, browser windows, email clients, etc.
  • Click the Scan button (bottom right)
  • It may take a while to scan (don't do anything while it's running)
  • When it's done, go up to File > Save. Choose to save it to your desktop.
  • Open rootkitrevealer.txt on your desktop and copy the entire contents and paste them here
Once again, the deeper the scan, the longer it takes. Please hang in there and let the scans run, post the results.

no matter where I save the rootkit reveal txt file it does not show up. I saved it on the desk top and it is not there. I created a new folder and saved it in that and it is not there. I went into control panel and enabled 'show contents of hidden folders', opened the folder and it is still not there.

I opened the stat/log in superspyware and clicked on the log file, to view it and nothing happens. I restarted the computer and tried to view the log file again and nothing happened once I clicked on it.

Hey Jake,
Neat stuff going on there, thanks for sticking with it.
Lets see if this gives me a direction to go in:
Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
We may try some of this in safe mode but for now give me the results of this scan :)

Harry

I re-ran rootkit revealer and am typing the results from the lap top to the PC. Since the log file wouldn't open with Super Spy Ware I couldn't do the same with that.

Hi JakeMC,
I have to check on a couple of things there, I am going to ask for the guys over in tech to take a peek at this.
I am thinking that there might be some system files corrupted, or something along those lines.

Hang in there.....

Hey JakeMC,
Thanks to the guys on the tech side for helping us out here.
We need to check a couple of settings:

Open Device Manager and expand (click +) IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Right click on Primary IDE channel and choose Properties. Under the Advanced Settings tab, what is listed as Transfer Mode and Current Transfer Mode? Check the Secondary IDE channel the same way.
If either channel is listed as using PIO Only as the current transfer mode, right click on that channel and choose Uninstall...accept the change and reboot. The channel will be reinstalled when Windows starts and should be reset to use the DMA transfer mode.

For the next step, you might need your windows XP disk.
Lets run System File Checker, to make sure all of your protected files are not corrupt. The scan will automatically replace any corrupt files that it finds.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the program, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows XP disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan. If this still asks you to put in your windows XP CD, and you do not have the CD (If you bought it preinstalled) post back for more tips, otherwise enter Windows CD.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Please reboot, and let me know if anything has changed.

Also, please rehide the protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Check" Hide protected operating system files.
Let me know how this works, stop if you have any problems.

Did as you instructed. No comments from the computer when I ran the SFT /scan. It went through the process and finished. I ran windows update and the only update was Net Framework. I clicked download and install. It down loaded but did not install. The computer's 'working' light was solid and the 'busy' noise was constant. After an hour I decided to end the install. It took the computer a long time to cancel the process and then the computer slowed to a crawl and has since stayed that way. When a command finally is done from a left click, the Desktop icons slowly roll down and disappear then display again (this has been happening all along). I restarted and it took 15 minutes to boot up. Just when you think the computer is getting faster, it goes back to its' old tricks.

The primary transfer mode was DMA If Available
The current transfer mode is Ultra DMA Mode 2

The secondary transfer mode was DMA if Available
The current transfer mode is Ultra DMA Mode 5

In this lap top computer the busy/working light was on, solidly lit, with the working sound ongoing, but it takes forever for the computer to do what it is doing. It is not that the computer is freezing but something is using all the resources (which are low to begin with.

In Task Manager, these are the processes that are running presently ( I typed these)

Hi JakeMC,
A couple of things I would like you to do.
First, try shutting down AVG, as if the program is scanning your machine in the background it will really slow it down. My AVG is scheduled to scan at 8AM and I know when its scanning, really slows down this laptop.

Next, boot into safe mode, and start the AVG scan in safe mode. Do this at a time where you can leave it run, its going to take a while. Allow it to fix whatever it finds, try to note that back to me.

Open up notepad, just to make sure it works and is not stopped by something in your machine. Click start, all programs, accessories and you should see notepad there.

Download Process Explorer, the link for the download is at the bottom of that page. This is a handy little utility that will give us some insite on the running process's there. (its similar to task manager) Take a look and see whats running with that tool.

I have a couple of other things that I am looking at, I may have you uninstall AOL alltogether, if your ok with that. You can always load it back on the machine later.
