I know for a fact that there are updates, however, whenever I try to install them, the computer has to restart. The computer, for some reason, refuses to restart. I've waited at least one hour once, and all there was a light blue screen (not a BSOD) that's there when the computer is normally shutting down.

Due to the fact that your product key is invalid and that WGA updates either failed to install or the installation process was canceled, I have to consider your version of windows to be cracked.
While we understand that you may not have been aware your copy of Windows is not legitimate, we are unable to help you any further on this site. We have a strict policy we adhere to in only helping people who have legitimate copies of Windows.
I would recommend you return to that store where you bought the computer and ask for refund, it would be good to mention to them that, by selling you a computer with an illegal version of windows, they broke the law.
