Use Final cut to edit video from Sony handycam

Hey All

All my video editing programs cant read my video files from my cam. The only program that read the files is VLC. How can that be? the camera is Sony Handycam hdd and the video files are .mpg. The programs i want to use i Imovie and Final Cut.

anyone who can fix this problem? can i convert the files? and how?
