Hi mikeyb, welcome to Geeks to Go! <_<

Please move Hijack This to a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible (otherwise it will scatter backups all over your desktop).

Go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://yoursearcher.com/sp.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://yoursearcher.com/index.htm
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://yoursearcher.com/index.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://yoursearcher.com/sp.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://yoursearcher.com/index.htm
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [IEengine] C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEeng.exe
O4 - Global Startup: winlgn.exe

Reboot in safe mode (by tapping F8 at startup and select safe mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEeng.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlgn.exe

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log, and let us know how your system's working. :D

Thanks for amazingly quick reply!
This is where I show my lack of knowledge!!
Closed all windows and ran only HijackThis.
When deleting checked files an error message saying 'Unable to delete the file:
04-Global Startup:winlgn.exe.
The file may be in use. Use Taskmanagerto shutdown'......etc
But only HijackThis is running??

Also, after rebooting in Safe Mode, with Show hidden files' selected, how do I find the two C:\ files to delete?
Would it be through My Compter\C Drive etc?

Sorry to be so thick!

More processes are running then you think. Hit Ctrl-alt-del then select task manager. In task manager look for winlgn.exe and end the process. Then delete it through HiJackThis.

yes you can go through My Computer and through to the sub folders. Be careful only to delete those files admin has told you only.

Couldn't find the C:\ files in bold so did nothing but reboot.
System now seems fine. Can delete unwanted favorites and they stay deleted. Also, got rid of 'yoursearcher.com' as Home Page.
Will enclose latest HijackThis log but all now seems fine.

Is there any downloadable program that will prevent further infection?
Am already running Symantec Norton AntiVirus.

I don't who you guys are, but thanks a million for your advice and 'hand holding'!

We are glad we could help.

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use).

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.
Link to SpywareBlaster: http://www.geekstogo...tion=show&id=12

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.
