Hi there,

I too am suffering from one wrong web click and ended up with trojan-spy.html.smit.fraud.c on my system. I beleive I dis-abled the thing by deleting some of the files and registry hacks that were found with HJT, Spybot, and Adaware, but I can't seem to get the desktop back in order. Other symptoms that I have that seem unique from others descriptions. MyComputer is nowhere to be found. The control panel applets don't all function properly. For example, the add/remove programs applet does not populate the list to allow removal of software. Software can't install properly as well. The satrt bar is messed up as well, in that entrys are missing and wont display properly. The ones that are there don't react. Desktop icons have to be right clicked and use OPEN. No double clicks. I must have broken IE since it wont run at all now. Everytime it tries to open a web site, it is seeing it as a file.

I tried Spybot and Adaware. And AVG from Grisoft (only one I could get to install).

Please help!

Here is my current Hijack log.

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out). ;)

Disable teatimer
for now. It will interfere with the fix.

Please download and install these programs - don't run them yet!!

Please download and unzip
About:Buster to a folder. Inside the folder is a readme file that has instructions on the use of the program.
AboutBuster MUST be updated before you use it.
Start AboutBuster, click the update button, check for update, drag the box to the side and hit download updates, close the box . Don't run it yet.

Please download and install AD-Aware.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.

Download and unzip cwsserviceremove to your desktop. use either link below:
http://computercops....F...oad&id=3002[/url
http://www.mytechsup...rviceremove.zip

Download CW-Shredder at the link below:
http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWSshtreder.exe://http://www.mytechsupport.ca/helpwit...CWSshtreder.exe

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

For anyone using Windows XP, 'Search' will not automatically show hidden files even if your folder options settings are set to do that. Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - click here http://www.davehigha...ds/xphidden.zip to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here's the fix:

Important Step
1. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:

iebe32.exe

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

2. Reboot into SafeMode. <---MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO DO THIS!!

3. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpybotSD TeaTimer] C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O16 - DPF: {1ED48504-8834-11D5-AC75-0008C73FD642} - file://C:\ptc\wildfire\i486_nt\obj\pvx_install.exe
O16 - DPF: {3DA5D23B-EFE1-4181-ADB7-7D457567AACA} (TGOnlineCtrl Class) - http://zone.msn.com/...pandaonline.cab
O16 - DPF: {74F5614A-8A8C-43B4-8CC2-4B4EFAF4A6C5} (TSCCInstall Class) - http://www.techsmith...ec/tsccinst.cab
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://www.shockwave...aploader_v5.cab
O23 - Service: Network Security Service ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\iebe32.exe (file missing)

4. Delete the following files if present:
If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\iebe32.exe (file missing)

(and any other files with the same name that end in .dll, .exe or .dat, you may find them right next to each other, example - appsw.exe, appsw.dll, appsw.dat)

5. Run AboutBuster . This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report (copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

6. Scan with AdAware and let it remove any bad files found.

7. Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

8. Double click on the cwsserviceremove and when asked to merge say yes.

9. Run CW-Shredder - Hit the FIX button - let it run and fix what it finds.

10. Reboot into normal mode.

11. Download the Hoster from here http://members.aol.c...bee/hoster.zip. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

12. Download and run this online virus scan:
[url="http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp"]http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
Make sure you check "AutoClean"

then reboot and post a fresh Hijack This log to see how we did. :tazz:

I was good up to the point where I needed to got to services.msc. I dont have a RUN under the start menu. When I go to task maanger and try to start a process, I get the following error:

MMC cannot open the file C:\Windows\system32\service.msc

This may because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access.

Same goes for any of the console apps.

I've been trying snce my original post to fix this system, and tried many scanners, but nothing has helped. I am going to disable teatimer and reboot, and post a new HJT log as many things have changed.

Thanks, dave

I still have problems.

Start Menu is still hosed. No programs, no Run.
Control Panel Applets don't all function.
Desktop is still messed up from the initial infection.
No My computer. No Network Folder.
I was able to get the background color to change,
but I am not able to change wallpaper.
IE will not start
It tries to open websites as files.

There are probably other things not working.

Thanks,

Dave

Download CW-Shredder at the link below:
http://cwshredder.ne.../CWShredder.exe

Download http://www.derbilk.de/SpSeHjfix112.zip. to the desktop and then right-click a blank part of desktop & select new folder, call it spfix and unzip the file into that folder.

Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.
Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".
When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage

Now run CWShredder - Use the FIX button!

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.

What is the above?

I haven't tackled a smit.fraud infection before but I have tons of research to help me, so bear with me.

Did you do a scan and the scan told you that you have this infection? I am having trouble seeing signs of it. Did you clean up stuff before you posted the log?

Do you have an anti-viral product installed/updated/running?

C:\ptc\flexlm\i486_nt\obj\ptc_d.exe

This is the license deamon for the CAD software I use. It runs a service and controls what features of the software is allowed to run. The software is called Pro/Engineer.

I've done a lot since my first posting, which is why the log seems clean. I've followed just about all the advise given for this type infection. But the system still has the problems I've described.

I can't use IE. It doesn't seem to run. When I go to start it, a dialog comes up indicating it is trying to download the file . If I pick open, it then posp up saying it doesn't have a way to open the file and would I like to find an appropriate program.

I'll try it with Firefox as that is all I have that will run.

Nope. Needs IE.

Do you have an anti-viral running? There are some free ones...Grisoft has one. Firefox can be used to download that.

I've run a bunch and have found no virus's I had AVG on for a while after the infection, but it broke at some point so I uninstalled it. I think the problem is whatever infected me, isgetting in the way of installs. the machine would not allow links to be placed in the start menu or one the desktop. Still doesn't I think. Right now, the system is running very light. I dont; even see the clock in the system tray (not sure why).

Should I re-install it?

Did you try reinstalling AVG? You really need something running right now.
