why do you hope to avoid Apple/iPod? I have the Apple MA146LL/A iPod Black Video 30GB MP3 Player, it's a Recertified, but works great

I don't like Apple's marketing practices, and the iPod's hardware failure rate is......unimpressive.

If it's large capacity and cheap, tell me!

Cheap? No, nothing will be cheap at that range. Try the Creative Zen. I don't know how much it costs in the US. My cousin has one and he was pretty satisfied till it had some problems - doesn't have warranty as he bought it in the US. Nevertheless it's a good player from what I hear. Good sound quality too.

i've got a creative Zen Vision M which usually goes for $250ish...but you can find it cheaper..i love the thing...i've got pretty much every song i ever listen to on it and i've still got a lot of space...plus you can play videos and use it as a picture viewer...it also has a microphone so you can make audio notes etc.. (like recording a shopping list or whatever)..it's a great player for sure....the navigation buttons are all "real click" buttons (like not touch sensitive) with the volume/selection slider being a reactive touch....i prefer this because it's a lot harder to accidentally press a button...also with an extra cable (not sold with the device) you can hook the thing up to your TV and play videos with it on the TV
the wife has a zen microphoto (not listed on their site anymore but you can still find them) and she loves it as well...much smaller capacity (i think it goes up to 8 gb)...but it's really portable and easy to use...all the buttons are reactive touch type buttons

I'm really leaning towards a Zune 80GB. For about $230, I get 80GB of space. It seems like a solid device, but I'm not 100% certain.

I have a Zune, and love it. I've never had a problem with it, even after my 13 year old dropped it repeatedly. We've been using it daily for about six months now. So far, so good!

Another vote for the Zune. I owned an iPod, but gave it away when I got my Zune. Love it.

I have a 30GB Zune and it has worked fine for me so far. The software very simple and straightforward and I like how you can send songs to other people who also own a Zune. Though I have one of the older ones without the fancy touch pad. I vote for the Zune too!

Ive got a 32GB zen, the new flash based one and have to say I love it so far. There is a new version of the zen with wi-fi out now as well, but I think the original one is great as its pretty much the perfect size for an mp3 player and has a great screen and battery life. Its pretty much perfect, you do need to re-encode videos to have the correct resolution before they will play but that is something most people will do anyway. Its lighter and smaller than my brothers Touch and while I like his for its wifi I like the fact I have twice the storage and longer battery life better.
I used to use Sony walkmans as they have an unbeatable battery life and a build quality but my 20Gb nwa-3000 started to tell its age and needed replaced after a good 3 years of service(it still works the battery is just going and I dropped it a few too many times) and I went for the Zen which is less susceptible to getting a good skud when you drop it because of its low weight.

I used to own the Creative one with the built in USB drive and it was great. 1gb of music and very light. The only issue I didn't like was it ate batteries.
Then I moved up to the large storage Creative and I hated it.
Then eventually I got myself the 160gb Ipod an a 1gb Shuffle (the square one). Both are great.
If I could do it all over again I would just go with the Shuffle. For 160gb is really over kill for me, and do you really need ALL your music there. 1GB holds more than enough for long drives and my time at the gym.

I think whether people need a larger capacity is personal, I know myself I don't get allot of music on 1Gb, I can't even get my whole collection on 30Gb and I flick about myself so 1Gb would drive me nuts.
I think the new flash players are good compromise between physical size and storage size, Love my zen its a nice middle ground between size and capacity with a screen not to big and not too small which is my one of my biggest criticisms against apple players where they either have huge screens or tiny little ones.

Well, its done now. My mom found a new 30GB Zune for $100, and it came with everything in the box and some extras, like cases. Thanks for all the input, and on my next purchase, I'll definitely look into a Creative!
