Not sure, this is the boyfriends computer. He's had it since 2004 and the only thing he remembers having was Norton when he first got it but that must have been removed properly if not he wouldn't have been able to install OneCare right?

OneCareUI = "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live\winssnotify.exe"

That's in the autorun entries. There's still Onecare stuff left on here too.

Let's see if it's in msconfig.

Going back to happyrock's instructions: Go to Start > Run, and type msconfig. Click on the Startup tab. Do you see any entry that looks like this? If so, uncheck it and click Apply. You'll have to reboot your system.

If you don't see it, come back and let us know.

I found winssnotify.exe in the startup, so I unchecked it and restarted the comp and......still can't install antivirus!
I'm starting to worry there might be something more sinister going on this computer. :)

There's no sign of any of it in the uninstall list - I'm thinking that it's just that the folders/files are still there. Do you still have the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live folder?

Hello Vickeye...

Open Registry Editor and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run...click on the Run folder in the left pane. Look in the right pane for the entry "OneCareUI". Right click on that and choose "Delete"...accept the change.

Reboot and post another Startup List Log for us.

I just found a Windows Live OneCare Quarantine file amd a 'winss log'.

Part of AVG installed but it couldn't go any further without getting rid of the other antivirus.

That all looks good.

Click Start, then Run, type prefetch and click "Ok".

In the Prefetch window, click "Edit" on the toolbar and choose "Select All"...press the Delete key to clear the prefetch folder.

Close all open windows and reboot. Let Windows load completely then reboot again. (It takes a couple of boot cycles to fully repopulate the prefetch with fresh files.)

See if AVG will install after the second reboot.
