It's letting people get away with egregious violations that give us a populace that just reeks of stupidity because so many people seem to have absolutely no command of their own language! (non-native speakers are excused, but their English is often better than ours anyway)
It's not just me either, there was recently an article in the New York Times about how many new college grads, who are otherwise excellently qualified, often do not get the job they just applied for because of using textspeak when writing the interviewer a thank-you email!
Not to mention all the horrid public occurrences of improper use of apostrophe in the 3rd degree, and felonious quotation marks. I've even seen (and have a photo of) a store whose sign should have read "Discount Rice Beauty and Aids", except that Discount was misspelled in a way that I cannot repeat here.
