Supplement to my last reply:

After posting my last reply I wondered if I would have problems downloading from a computer other than the one with the crashing problems, which has Vista as its OS. Accordingly, I used another of my computers (which is operating on Windows XP Home Edition) and it, too, downloaded the file instantly.

Got the file downloaded, finally.



Download the attachment at the end of this post (this will be your runscanner file fixed by me)

• Save it to your desktop then double click the runscanner icon this will run the program.
• You will notice several entries in red and in blue.
• Click the button at the top called Fix selected items
• Accept the warning(s) and repeat until they are all gone.
• Reboot your PC

After you reboot your PC please post a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

I downloaded and ran the runscanner_fix file and fixed the selected item (only one item, the chinese/japanese one was checked.)

From the time I ran the runscanner fix (5:20 AM) to the present (5:07 PM), it has crashed 22 times to a BSOD according to the Administrative Events Log.

As the computer most often crashes during periods of inactivity, I am most of the time made aware of the crash when I hear the Windows startup sound. When I am around, the BSOD appears to be what I would call the "standard" BSOD; i.e., a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to the computer. It also has the standard information about newly installed software or hardware checking and/or removal and contains technical information about creating a log file (mini dump file). The information is visible for only a few seconds before the restart begins.

I have attempted to capture a BSOD screen for you by turning off the automatic restart option in System Properties/advanced/startup and recovery/settings. I had hoped this would cause the BSOD to remain on the screen long enough for me to photograph it. For some reason, however, each time I uncheck the automatic restart option, Windows Vista turns it back on.

The best I can do for you is to send you (in pdf format) a copy of a recent bugcheck analysis showing codes and symbols created at the time of the BSOD. Accordingly, such a file is attached.

I am not sure why it is giving you the BSOD, but it does not look to be malware related since your logs look clean. I recommend that you start a new topic over in the Vista forum after we are done here and tell them the problems you are having with the BSOD, someone over there should be able to help find what is causing it.


Other then the BSOD, are you having any other problems with your computer?

Other than the crashes, the computer does fine.

I will do as you suggested and start a new thread elsewhere. I do want you to know, however, that I sincerely appreciate the time and effort that you have expended in attempting to assist me with this chronic problem.
