CD/DVD DRIVE NOT READING

I CAME ON HERE THE OTHER DAY, WITH A PROBLEM THAT MY CD ROM DRIVE WASNT BEING FOUND ON THE "MY COMPUTER" FOLDER. WELL I FIXED THAT PROBLEM AND IT NOW READS CD'S AN EVERYTHING BUT WHEN I WENT TO BURN A CD, THE BURNING PROGRAM SAYS THAT THERE IS NO DRIVE DETECTED. SO IT WONT LET ME BURN ANY CD'S...WHAT IS THE PROBLEM??

What burning program is it? Did you try different one?

i tried using SONIC and then i tried using NERO and it said that the drive was in use by another program when i tried using NERO, but i didnt have any other programs open?? so i have no idea whats goin on. i tried to restart my computer to see if that would work but it still did the same thing.

It's possible, that Nero, and Roxio are at conflict with each other.
Try to uninstall one.

i tried uninstalling sonic but it still has the same problem. all i want to do is burn a dvd but its giving me so much trouble lol! when i came on geekstogo earlier, someone helped me out and had me delete the upper and lower registry for the drive. does that have anything to do wit it?

Were you able to burn CDs/DVDs before? If so, at what point the problem started?

Also, try this...
Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

yes i was able to burn cd's before, i never tried to burn a dvd til the other day. but my drive stopped reading about 2-3 weeks ago. and when i went to device manager i only had PRIMARY IDE CHANNEL. there is no secondary channel. do i jus uninstall the primary??

k i uninstalled it and restarted my computer. it reinstalled. what next?

Still doesn't burn?
If so, you may try lens cleaner, but I suspect, you need a new drive.

it still doesnt burn. when i go to MY COMPUTER it detects the drive but its under the REMOVABLE DRIVE or something like that. its not under my HARD DISK DRIVES

In my opinion, the drive is dead.
New ones come for under $30.
