i tried using SONIC and then i tried using NERO and it said that the drive was in use by another program when i tried using NERO, but i didnt have any other programs open?? so i have no idea whats goin on. i tried to restart my computer to see if that would work but it still did the same thing.

It's possible, that Nero, and Roxio are at conflict with each other.
Try to uninstall one.

Were you able to burn CDs/DVDs before? If so, at what point the problem started?
Also, try this...
Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

Still doesn't burn?
If so, you may try lens cleaner, but I suspect, you need a new drive.

In my opinion, the drive is dead.
New ones come for under $30.
