I had the Virtumonde virus a few weeks ago. I did the cleanup, made the new system restore point and installed the Sunbelt firewall that you guys recommended and everything seemed fine. Then yesterday, two blank DOS screens popped up and closed. I immediately tried to update my Symantec virus definitions, but it acted as if I wasn't connected to the internet. My husband tried to do a Windows update, but that was blocked as well. My husband also mentioned a window popped up to download a virus scanner, and the whole window was a button. I ran a Symantec scan anyway, and about halfway through it gave me this message "Your computer will shut down in .... seconds" something about "NT Authority System" and something about "DCOM". Please help. Here is my log:

Hi,

This is much better - almost done here. Just some leftovers we have to delete :)

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O3 - Toolbar: Verizon Broadband Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-8CB0-AB60BB9AAE22} - C:\PROGRA~1\VOL_TO~1\VOL_TO~1.DLL (file missing)
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mnsrkh.dll

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Then, * Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Ok, I deleted those two things, I uninstalled ComboFix, and everything looks good. I can use my Windows update, I can update my virus definitions on Symantec, no more pop-ups, no more computer shut downs. I did scan with both Symantec and Malwarebytes Antimalware and they both found nothing.

Thank you so much (again!)

What can I do to prevent this in the future? Is Symantec and a firewall not enough?
And how can I donate to your work?

Glad I could help. :)

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.
Donation link is in my signature below. Thank you very much.

Happy Surfing again!
