Could you select the parameters box and make sure that there are no blank spaces in it.
Once you removed the (possible) spaced try starting the service.

there are no lines of information there, when i put the cursor in the box, hit the delete button, nothing happens at all. so i guess no spaces there.
when i try to start, it gives me the following message"

"windows could not start the windows image acquisition (WIA) service.
on Local Computer.

Error 1068:The dependency service or group failed to start."

cheers

You weren't asked to do the same thing twice :)
I was looking at different services this time.

Please delete the explore.txt file from your C:\ Drive.
Open up your start menu and type cmd in the white box.
Right click the cmd.exe entry that appears and Run as Administrator
In the black box, type sc start ShellHWDetection
A lot of information will appear, Please right click the black window and hit mark.
Select every line of text you recieved and hit Enter to copy.
Then paste it into your next reply.

Olrik

this is the window:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001]
Copyright © 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>sc start ShellHWDetection
[SC] StartService FAILED 1058:

The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has n
o enabled devices associated with it.

C:\Windows\system32>

i scrolled down, and the rest of the box was blank. i assume i was supposed to hit the 'enter" button after typing in the sc start........etc? nothing happened until i did, so i hit the enter button mate.

We're going to check your System Files.
Please input your Windows Vista CD.
  • Open up your start menu and type cmd in the white box.
  • Right click the cmd.exe entry that appears and Run as Administrator
  • In the black box, type sfc /scannow
  • It will now do a scan, let this run for a while. It will replace any faulty files.

olrik, thanks mate!
all i have are the recovery cd's from toshiba (manufacturer). they include vista, so i assume its ok to put those in and do the same? vista home premium came preinstalled, so i never had an actual "vista" disk, just the recovery cd's (2 of them).
thanks

here are the results. looks like the toshiba disks are not going to work for some reason.....
on the disks (2 of them), it says "recovery and application/drivers"
had to run the scan twice, once for each disk....or so i thought??

olrik, when i type ctrl alt r, nothing happens on either my laptop or the wifes!
so i dont know mate.
i did type the notepad c:\windows etc etc into the start search box, but when i clicked on the thing that came up, it said access denied!
i can get into the properties, security, etc on it, so there is something there, it just wont let me find what it is mate.
when i click "run as administrator" when it brings up the program in the search box, it will open, but it is just a blank notepad screen with the cursor flashing.
thanks mate,
martin

olrik,
i did manage to get into the file and open it mate.
i went to c, then to windows, and so on. after changing the security settings to allow me to see it, i could open it. only problem is, its a massive file! every time i try to copy n paste to the thread, it locks up the browser, then it times out! i tried to save the file to my desktop under a new file, and it is too large to upload to the site! even after using the zip thing, it is over 650k, so still too big to add as an attachment.
any ideas??
