iPod Nano issues

My friend's iPod has a bit of an issue.

Its a 4GB iPod Nano, 3rd Generation

Whenever it starts up, its in Diagnostic Mode. Any button combination does nothing; its always starts up this way. As far as I can tell, it passes all the tests.

Any ideas on problems/fixes?
