It looks like this goes a little deeper than corrupt/defective Networking components. WMI not starting is likely also linked to your Theme (Start button looking 'old') and Sound issues, so fixing one will (hopefully) correct the other.

Can you please do the following.
  • Click Start, select Run, type cmd and press OK
  • In the new command prompt window, type sc qc winmgmt > C:\results.txt
  • Navigate to your C: drive and open the text file results.txt -- please copy/paste the contents of this file into your next response.
We may need to end up trying to repair system files, do you have your Windows XP CD?

I'm sorry we haven't made a whole lot of head way yet.

No I don't think I have one Do I need it?

You weren't given a recovery CD or anything when you bought your machine? :)

I'll post the results tomorrow. :]

If you see this before then, could you also goto Start --> Run --> type services.msc and press OK --> Click on Action and then Export List.. --> Save it to an easy-to-reach location as services.txt --> Please Attach that file to your next reply.

Thanks,
- Dan

  • Click Start, select Run, type cmd and press OK
  • In the new command prompt window, type rundll32 wbemupgd, UpgradeRepository
  • Wait for the command to complete, and then repeat the sc qc winmgmt command I had you run earlier -- please post the results.
Could you please try running a sfc /scannow -- I'm hoping that you may have the I386 folder on your hard drive already.

It looks like the WMI service was repaired -- could you please try running that Intel driver .exe file and see if it can run to completion.

That scan seems complicated haha

I'll give it a try later tonight.

Without the CD it is pretty complicated, unfortunately. :)

Hi,

I wasn't sure if I was supposed to select C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R73044 or not

Yes, try that directory; do you know where the Intel .exe file extracted it's files to? That would be the other option.

What happens when you run the Intel .exe utility? Does it state that it's installing the drivers?

It didn't work

What happened? Any error messages?
  • Press Start
  • Select Run
  • Type devmgmt.msc and press OK
  • In the new window, please expand Network Adapters
  • Is your Intel adapter listed here? Does it have a yellow "!" beside it?

I did the scan but I'm not sure what to do after this has completed:

Normally it will prompt you to insert your CD in order to repair files, or if there's nothing to fix, it will simply close. What happened after the scan completed?

Could you please repeat the connectivity test -- here it is again.

Step 1 - Connectivity test:
  • Press Start
  • Select Run
  • Type cmd and press OK
  • In the new command prompt window, please type the following commands (*Note: each ping will take approximately 10 seconds to complete; wait for the command prompt to return before you type the next one. Also, the single '>' and double '>>' are intentional; please type the commands exactly as they appear):
    • ipconfig /all > C:\results.txt
    • route print >> C:\results.txt
    • ping 127.0.0.1 >> C:\results.txt
    • ping google.com >> C:\results.txt
    • ping 209.85.171.100 >> C:\results.txt
  • Once the above commands have completed, navigate to your C: drive and open the text file results.txt -- please copy/paste the contents of this file into your next response.

In regards to your Theme issue, please do the following.

The steps that I am about to suggest involve modifying the registry. Modfying the registry can be dangerous so we will make a backup of the registry first.
Modification of the registry can be EXTREMELY dangerous if you do not know exactly what you are doing so follow the steps that are listed below EXACTLY. if you cannot preform some of these steps or if you have ANY questions please ask BEFORE proceeding.

Backing Up Your Registry
  • Download ERUNT
(ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)
  • Install ERUNT by following the prompts
(use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)
  • Start ERUNT
(either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)
  • Choose a location for the backup
(the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked
  • Press OK
  • Press YES to create the folder.
Posted Image

Registry Modifications
Please do the following:
  • Select Start, then press Run. In the Run box, type notepad.exe and press OK
  • In the notepad window, select Format and ensure Word wrap is disabled (i.e. not ticked). Please copy all of the text in the CODE box below and paste it into the notepad window:
    sc create Themes binPath="C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs" type=share start=auto group=UIGroup tag=no DisplayName=Themes
    regsvr32 "%SystemRoot%\System32\shsvcs.dll"
  • Select File, then click Save As...
    • Set its save location to your desktop.
    • Set its File name to themes.bat
    • Set its Save as type to All Files
  • Press the Save button to save it to your desktop.
*Note: it is important that you change the Save as type, else you will simply save a text document, which will not achieve the same results.
On your desktop, run the Themes batch file (themes.bat). Once it runs, restart your computer. Is your theme now back to normal?
