Im not real educated w/ windows Vista like i am w/ XP, so im stuck. He went into my start up (msconfig) and unchecked everything, thinkikng it would boot up faster, then he ran some cleaning programs like Spybot search and destroy, AVG, spyware terminator, malware bytes and regseeker, now when i try to do a system restore or try to go back into my start up i get this message "Windows can not access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item." Im signed in under the admin and still cant get in. Any response or ideas would be GREATLY appreciated....thx in advance.

Welcome to GeeksToGo,

My name is Cbarnard I hope I may be of some assistance to you.

Please keep in mind this is not our job and I'm not here 24\7. It can take a little bit of time for me to reply back to you,
if it has been more than 48hrs since a reply, please PM me and I will be with you as soon as possible.

With that said lets take a look and get this problem taken care of.

What exactly did he uncheck in MSCONFIG ?

I see you have regseeker you should uninstall this. These programs cause more trouble than their worth. If your registry gets screwed up you can experience problems(kind of like this)

Are you right clicking on the program you want to run and the selecting "run as administrator" Just because your are in the admin account doesn't mean you are starting the programs as such. We will have to look at what he has done

Most of the software has backups created so these type of problems can be reversed. So don't lose hope yet

Get back to me and I will help you further

Cbarnard

RegSeeker is a registry troubleshooting and tweaking tool to be used in emergencies when searching in the registry needs to be done faster.

Although RegSeeker is safe; it can also make a person sorry for ever using it. Read the following page and see the warning on the screenshot. RegSeeker freeware page

I'm just going to step in briefly - DragonMaster Jay, the policy at Geeks to Go is that we do not recommend registry cleaners, ever. There really isn't such a thing as a safe registry tweaker, especially if it deletes anything automatically. This is a good read, with a link to another thread about registry cleaners as well.

Folks, let me note here, is that I added to the warning.

There is a stern warning. I did not recommend, ask, or try to ask of any downloading of the tool.

Although, it may seem like I said it is safe, I also said that users can be sorry as well for using it. Every registry modification is a risk. Through testing or just playing around; severe damage is possible!!!

Thank you for attempting to correct an issue, but it is now clear that I added to the warning!

If all he did was disable start-up items via MSCONFIG I doubt that you'll need to restore a back-up. If the complication is minor, you should be able to undo any wrong-doings by revising your start-up applications via MSCONFIG and then moving onto the "Startup" tab.

I agree with aLemmer here. Please fix, as aLemmer said, then please let us know of the results.

Can you access MSCONFIG?

Also, can you right click on System Restore and run the restore point?

If you need further assistance, I actually made a post explaining the usage of MSCONFIG.

nope cant get into MSCONFIG it just tells me that i dont have permission, cant do system restore either....i get the same message. ive used regseeker many times over a few yrs, never had a problem, ive used it on my other computers w/ Vista and no problems. I really cant tell u what all he unchecked in the start-up cause i cant get in there, but i do know that everything was unchecked. Sorry it took so long to respond, i appreciate all the help. Heres another odd thing, there are 3 accounts on the computer, the only one that doesnt work is mine (admin). I tried going into another account to get into my MSCONFIG, it asks for the pass word after i put in the password it tells me again....i have no permission. I know that the password is right ive used it for yrs on other programs...even this forum, i even tried the caps...no go.

Try to boot in to Safe mode to do this:

Reboot the computer

Then strike the F8 key several times before windows boots up, it should bring you to a screen that is black with white letters.

On this screen you will have the option to use:
Safe mode
Safe mode with networking
and Safe mode with command prompt.

Select Safe mode.

When it boots into windows select "Administrator"

Then see if you can get into MSCONFIG and click on normal boot

Then reboot and see if this will take care of your problem

I hope this will help

Let me know how this works and I will try and assist you further

Good Luck

Is this your machine, or is your 'kid' the real owner and you've messed with around with the settings?
Sometimes we really don't know such things (as who is really who), and we can't help you :)

Nobody will be deleting this thread...and acting like a 10 year old won't lend your story any credence. It IS hard to tell who's who in a forum setting...and you'd be surprised at some of the things we run into on the boards. I'm sorry you found your experience here less than enlightening.

Have you tried running a system restore from command prompt?
