I tried resetting the boot sequence on the BIOS a second time and this time it booted into the CD recovery console.

Now, it's 15 years since I played DOS but I couldn't find any way of making the chkdsk J:/f work: it always went back to the C:\WINDOWS directory!

Using the command without parameters, of course, checked the C Drive.

How would I set it to go to the J drive and run the chkdsk?

No luck - it doesn't work.

I think I've played around with this one long enough - and I'm sure you have too!

Since the 3rd party defrag program worked fine, and the only reason I have been trying to get chkdsk to work is because the Windoze defrag wouldn't work without it, and it didn't work as well, I will leave it there.

Linux here I come....
