Essentially I need some help releasing the permissions on some backup files from my old XP x64 account.

I recently decided to switch back to Vista x64 after having some install issues, and fighting with programs that did not come out with an XP x64 release. Unfortunately, I did not just copy the files I wanted to back up to another drive. Instead, I used Acronis True Image Home 11 to make a full backup of the partition, in hopes that I could mount it and copy files over, even if I had to restore sections of the partition.

To my anguish, I have been fighting with the permissions of the backup partition, trying to access my old files. I have tried giving my current Vista account full access (including in Safe Mode), and changing the parameters from read-only, but as soon as I go to apply the change, Vista gives me a "You do not have sufficient permission to complete this action..." error.

Anyone with any advice would be tremendously appreciated. (The topic seems to be a little too broad to rely on Google, as it has been little help in this matter).

Take ownership of folders/files: http://www.winmatrix...showtopic=13157

If that won't help, try Vista hidden admin account: http://www.howtogeek...-windows-vista/

Awesome, thank you for the help! You just saved me what was sure to turn into a considerable headache, and a lot of swearing.

The first website took care of it. Downloaded the ownership reg key, restored the files I needed (about 5 years worth of documents and pictures) and repossessed them. After that, it was a simple security setting change, and I had full access. There are a few quirks about the key, it tends to crash when "owning" a folder with >9000 files, but I can't even really say it's an issue. Finally got Vista x64 installed, and running clean :)
