Hi Siraphic,

If you cannot find the file later through Windows Explorer, then try the Windows SEARCH Function

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Now let's do some work on your log:

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
* Click Start, Programs and Accessories and open Windows Explorer.
* Select a hard drive from the left hand side of the Windows Explorer window.
* Select View the Entire contents of this drive

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ScanRegistry] C:\WINDOWS\scanregw.exe /autorun
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SystemTray] SysTray.Exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Y357RXj7j] IR4IAG.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Y357RXj7j] IR4IAG.EXE

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to Start To Safe Mode Using the F8 method in Windows 98/98SE/ME

To start your computer in Safe Mode:
*turn the computer on
*as the computer restarts, press and hold down the Ctrl key until the Windows 98 startup menu appears. (This also works with the F8 key following the same steps)
*Choose Safe mode from the startup menu,
*press Enter
*Windows starts in Safe mode.
*Restart your computer when finished troubleshooting

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files, and DELETE them (if they are present):

Note: When you find the file Sys Tray.Exe, right click on it and check its Properties. If it says Microsoft don't erase it. Look for another instance of the file which doesn't have Microsoft as part of its properties.

SysTray.Exe
IR4IAG.EXE

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Regards,

I am still having problems. I used the Search function in windows, but couldn't find IR4IAG.exe so that I could delete it. I don't think I did the following part of your instructions correctly:

* Click Start, Programs and Accessories and open Windows Explorer.
* Select a hard drive from the left hand side of the Windows Explorer window.
* Select View the Entire contents of this drive

I don't see how to View the Entire contents unless you mean by just expanding the little box to the left of the C:\

Thank you very much for your patience

Hi Siraphic,

That is correct. These instructions are general in some instances.

Here we ware saying that we want to to look at the content of the C:\ drive and, where there are folders, by expanding them by clicking on the little plus signs.

You did exactly what you were supposed to do. I told you to ask if you didn't understand, and you did.

So let's have a go at the previous instructions again and remember to review the comments I made about SysTray.EXE before deleting.

I still cannot find the IR4IAG.EXE file either by searching or through the windows explorer.

When I do a search on the SysTray.exe file, this comes out:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM (System Tray Applet)

How do I navigate through the troubleshooter. I close it everytime because none of the options seem relevant.

Much thanks

Hi Siraphic,

We are having fun aren't we?

I don't have an ME system so we will have to improvise a bit.

Let's take these files one at a time.

Go to the SEARCH function on ME and type in SysTray.Exe.

It may come up with multiple examples. That's OK.

When the search is finished and the results displayed, right click on every one and check the properties and look to see if it says Microsoft. If it does, the file is LEGIT. If it doesn't, and be sure, then delete it.

I wish I didn't have ME.

I deleted all SysTray.Exe in the order provided. I still can't find the IR4IAG.EXE file when I do the search in Safe mode.

Here is the logfile.

Hi Siraphic,

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
* Click Start, Programs and Accessories and open Windows Explorer.
* Select a hard drive from the left hand side of the Windows Explorer window.
* Select View the Entire contents of this drive

Now look IR4IAG.EXE for under either:

Did as directed, but could not find IR4IAG.exe file. Only files that resembled them were IR41_32.AX, IR41_QC.DLL, and IR41_QCX.DLL, but no IR4IAG.EXE

I am adding this, because it might be of some help.

Aftering fixing with Hijack, and restarting in Normal mode, Ad-Aware notes the following registry modifications, in this order

1. Key: Software \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Main
C:\ Windows \ SYSTEM \ blank.htm

2. Same as above, except for 1 is HKEY_Current_User, and 2 is Hkey_Local_Machine.

3. Key: Software \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Search
http://ie.search.msn...st/srchasst.htm

4. Key: Software \ Microsoft \ Current Version\ Ryb
Value: Y357RXj7j
Data: IR4IAG.EXE

and then there are three others relating to autorun, system tray, and number 3 repeated.

Thanks again

Hi Siraphic,

Well a bit of news today:

1. We can forget about dealing with SysTray.exe. It is a LEGIT file for your system.

2. Very little progress on O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Y357RXj7j] IR4IAG.EXE

It may have something to do with Video Codex. Would that ring a bell with you?

3. MOsearch has to be removed.

To get rid of MOESEARCH

a. Go Start>>Run>>type msconfig>>OK

b. Look under both the SERVICES and STARTUP tabs for entries related to MOsearch and uncheck them. Then click APPLY

c. You will asked to RESTART your system. Do it.

d. After startup, Run HJT with all windows closed and place a checkmark beside the following entry if it is present:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [MOSearch] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYSTEM\MOSEARCH\BIN\MOSEARCH.EXE

Click Fixed checked and exite the program.

e. REBOOT into SAFE MODE

f. Using Windows Explorer DELETE the following folder and all its content:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\SYSTEM\MOSEARCH

g. REBOOT back into Normal MODE

h. Finally, run HijackThis and with all windows closed except for HJT, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Did as directed, but unfortunatley when I restarted in Normal Mode, Ad-Aware noted a change in the registry, which was the MOSEARCH.exe file. Did you want me to delete this file in combination with the previous files, e.g. O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Y357RXj7j] IR4IAG.EXE

I haven't the slightest what Video Codex is, but if it is superfluous, I'm prepared to delete it.

Might we clean up this log by deleting stuff that I don't even use. For example:

Hi Siraphic,

Pleae do the following:

1. UNINSTALL Ad-Aware completely

2. Redo all the procedures listed in my previous post

3. Include all the 09s and 016 you don't want in your HJT fix

4. Yes DELETE the MOsearch directory.

5. We can't delete the other because we can't find it

6. Remember to reboot and send a fresh log.

Regrads,

Trevuren

Deleted Adaware and Spybot, tried to delete Norton Antivirus as well, but it wouldn't fully delete. Repeated the previous posts, starting with cleanmgr in Normal Mode, then SpSeHjfix and Shredder in Safe Mode, then deleted the MOsearch out of the log in Safe, as well as a MOSEARCH.LGC file in C:\Windows\Applog. Looked for IR4IAG.exe, but still no where to be found.

MOSEARCH.exe is gone from the log.

Can I delete all of the 16s and 9s? or just the ones I mentioned in the previous posts?

Did a search containing the TEXT of Y357RXj7j, which is connected with IRI4AG.exe, which yielded the following files worth noticing:

User.DAT
User.NAV
imgarreg.tds : C:\Program FIles\TDS#
RG1096700791.CAB : C:\_Restore\Archive
vxdlast.log C:\_Restore\Logs
