And I suppose they want you to purchase the product in order to get rid of those "errors". Our advice is to avoid registry cleaners like the plague. Contrary to popular belief, it will not speed up your system to clean the registry, and you run the very real risk of rendering your PC unbootable. An automated registry cleaner can be very dangerous. If your PC is running slowly, you'd be better off performing simple maintenance tasks such as clearing out temp files, defragging your hard drive, etc.

All I can say is the speed-up will be very if not barely noticeable. On the other hand I can say I've been using reg cleaners forever. It all depends on which regcleaners you use. I wouldn't advise a regcleaner to a PC-noob. Now just put the same question on another forum and you'll get different answers. So my advice would be somewhat like sari's. Unless you know what you're doing don't use them. However if you still want to use one do it on your own risk. Oh ye .. another thing .. defragging won't speed up your PC either .. contrary to popular belief. At least the speed-up will be like I've admitted for regcleaners: "barely noticeable".

Look at this one .. it even promises a speed up of 300%! Ridiculous IMHO

I would disagree about defragging - if it's performed on a regular basis, it will maintain your PC and the difference after it's been done will not be that noticeable. On a PC that has not had defrag performed in a long time, if ever, the speed difference can be quite noticeable. "Optimizing" the registry, however, would only be of noticeable worth if you had some need to search your registry on a regular basis, which is highly unlikely.

This is an excellent article about the use of registry cleaners, written by a very respected expert in the malware removal and analysis world.

I'm going to back sari up here.

You could compare a defrag to filing documents.
If you know where you can find the documents, you will be able to read into them quicker.
The same goes for computers. If it doesn't have to search 'all over the place' to find the file, it will load faster.
As sari said, A PC that hasn't been defragged for a long time (or at all for that matter) will increase in speed after a defrag.

I wrote a guide on how to Maintain your Machine in the "How To" section of this forum. (Link)

An interesting article about registry cleaners: http://www.windowsbb...y-cleaners.html
Although it was written when XP was the latest OS, it still applies as the registry is basically the same.

FWIW - I have hosed several systems with registry cleaners - to include the Microsoft RegClean 4.1 and the registry cleaner in their online OneCare scanner.
