that's too bad, I used to be a Norton user, and switched to AVG about 4 years ago when Norton was hogging my resources. But I will take your advice and try another one...

I booted into the CD, and I'm running the seatools scan now (typing this from my laptop)...

Cool :)
I used to use AVG for number of years, until ver. 8.0 came out. Horrible...

OK, it FAILED the short test and suggested that I run the long test.

So I'm starting the long test now... so far it's 0% done and already found 3 errors.

I will post an update when the test is completed (most likely when I wake up in the morning)... thanks

you are right... I'd rather it be anything other than the HDD... but it's up to 24% now and still only 3 errors. So maybe it could be fixable errors?

If it asks me if I want to repair bad sectors, should I say yes?

Surely, but keep in mind, that bad sectors has some tendency of spreading out.
IMHO, once HD shows some issues, you better make sure your data is backed up regularly.

OK I will let you know what happens when it finishes the scan (up to 40% now)...

Is there a reliable way to really backup my entire computer? I've got all the important files backed up, but it would be nice to have a true backup so if my computer failed I could just move to a new HDD or even another machine without having to reinstall and configure everything...

The best way of backing up is to create an image...

Acronis True Image: http://www.acronis.com/ - not free, but the best

Free alternatives:
- Macrium Reflect: http://www.macrium.com/ReflectFree.asp (highly recommended)
- DriveImage XML: http://www.runtime.o...veimage-xml.htm
- SelfImage: http://www.excelcia....N...icle&sid=21
- Paragon Drive Backup: http://www.paragon-s...ome/db-express/

Thanks, I will definitely check out Acronis, as it is something worth investing in.

And what about the best HDD array? This is a home PC, but it's also my business... so would I basically use Acronis to create an image onto an external HD regularly, and perhaps have an extra one that I keep offsite in case of fire? Is there a certain type/quality of HD that is best for the backup image?

the scan is now up to 52%...

Exactly.

I really don't have any preferences (mostly after 6 weeks old Seagate gave up on me :))

OK, so I'm not sure if it actually finished the test, but now the Seatools just says FAILED:

"The drive is not responding to commands. Check cables and drive power connection."

Maybe I should try scanning again? Or is there something else to try? Or I need to abandon this HDD?

There is some info about the error here: http://forums.seagat...;message.id=363, but IMO, you're done :)

Ok, thanks for the research.

I'll try scanning again and if it fails again I'll probably start the process of moving to a new HDD...

so here's my new question...

what's the best way to seamlessly move to a new HDD? I'm pretty sure my PC case has one or more empty HDD slots. Should I get a new HDD and make an image of my current drive on it? also, my PC has an "HP Recovery disk" which I assume is a partition of this HDD. So would I first need to partition the new HDD to match the partitions of the current one, then create separate images for each partition? Or just one image? Or skip the recovery drive...

I'm thinking this drive must not be TOO bad yet, since I can still run Windows and run pretty much any program for awhile until it crashes...

and be sure to PM me your paypal address

Don't worry about it at all. I do what I do, because I like it :)

As for new HD, most drives come with cloning software, which will allow you to replicate your old drive into a new one.
