Alright, I have a HP Pavilion DV9287 laptop running on Windows Vista 32-bit that has been working fine until recently. I only get video externally (the display isn't clean, I have vertical dotted lines across the display) the main LCD of the laptop turns on but does this fading white into the black number and than I'm left with several red lines running across the screen vertically while it is on. This issue started while I was defragmenting the laptop and it freezing.

I know the video card works, for some unknown reason during the multiple attempts of trying to fix this issue, the laptop has started absolutely normal with the main LCD and I'm able to log in and everything, but after a reboot, it starts all over again with the same symptoms.

On the external display, after the POST startup I get a black screen (no blinking cursor) after 5 - 10 minutes or so I get the blue screen about the error and the a system memory dump and the laptop restarts. I can start in safe mode with networking with no problem aside from the video display. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the HP recommended drivers and the drivers straight from Nvidia to no avail. Another thing I have noticed that's funny, is that when I uninstall the video driver and reboot, the laptop starts in normal mode with sound and everything (on the external display, still nothing on the main display) but since there are no video drivers everything is ugly and in gray in low resolution. But if I install the video drivers and reboot, then I get the black screen again on the external display after the POST startup.

I've ran the diagnostic tools of CHKDSK, and memory scan, virus scan, tried creating a restore point when the laptop started normally (on the main LCD) but that froze the laptop and back to square one. I'm thinking it might have something to do with the master boot record or Windows Vista, but I'm not sure how to check either.

I'm not sure if this is a duplicate or not, I read other similar posts, but it just wasn't my issue exactly, all help is greatly appreciated.
