This has happened twice to me now. I am using a Dell Studio 1555 laptop, Vista Home Premium 64-bit. Whenever I try safely disconnecting my external hard drive, or just unplugging my mouse, my computer crashes and I get the BSOD. The screen doesn't stay on long enough for me to catch exactly what the error is, but I even tried doing the F8 at boot up and returning my laptop to Manufacturer Settings or whatever. I can't think of anything that would cause my USB ports to crash my computer! Does anyone know why this would happen?

Thanks in advance.

You should NEVER disconnect any USB device not listed in "Safely remove hardware" while computer is on. Mouse for sure.

I didn't know doing that was such a big deal... besides, I've done it before and it didn't give me the BSOD. When I click the remove usb safely icon in my taskbar, it doesn't list my mouse, so how would I go about unplugging that safely without crashing my computer?

Also, like I said, this never happened before (either on my desktop OR my laptop until lately). How would I find the underlying cause?

Thank you again.

It's irrelevant. You shouldn't be doing things, which shouldn't be done.
You can run across the freeway 10 times, still being alive, but on the 11th try, you're dead.

so how would I go about unplugging that safely without crashing my computer?

Turn the computer off.

Well that's pretty annoying... I only have 2 USB ports, and I keep all of my music on my external, so I have to unplug my mouse in order to get songs from my external onto my iPod.

I just wanted to know why suddenly this could be happening, because if it's something very serious I'll just take it to a tech to fix it, or just fix it myself if it's something I can do.

Anyway, I tried sending an error report through Windows, and they gave me some info, I don't know if it is of any use or not, though.

I'm not sure, which part of what I said is hard to understand.
You CAN NOT unplug your mouse, while the computer is ON.

If you need more USB ports, get USB hub.

I'm not sure why you're so snippy, my last post didn't say anything about unplugging my mouse while the computer is on, other than just stating that it's a nuisance. I've been nothing but polite in asking a question, and it's not appreciated, nor productive, to be rude.

I asked if there could be any underlying problems, like damaged hardware, software, or drivers, related to crashing. If you don't know, or can't know without running diagnostics, that's fine, but being knit picky and curt isn't something a tech staff should be doing. I am fully aware that customers or whatever are not always right, but obvious you know more about computers than I do, but that doesn't justify unprofessionalism.

But thank you for suggesting the USB hub. I'll be sure to look into it.

I apologize, but there is simply no reason to be looking for any other reason of your BSOD, than what I just said.
When you try to do something what shouldn't be done, expect consequences (BSOD). It doesn't have to happen every time though.

Sounds like a USB problem.
Try updating the drivers for it via 3rd party software.

Also what else is on your external?
Is there a OS on it that you boot from?
Or is it just your music?

Check compatibly issue's with your External also with Vista / your lappy.

:3

Just a few recommendations.
Sounds like a driver problem to me.

broni reminds me of the snl character nick your companies computer guy that assumed everything was user error and was a jerk to everyone about it.

Msft released some patches this week that have been screwing with some 64bit vista usb drivers causing dumps and bsod. Try uninstalling kb973879 and/or kb972039. Should fix it. Broni don't be like nick!

True, but I pays to always be respectful for the 2% is a system error. Saves those embarrasing times when you are wrong and get put in place.

I had the same problem today and fixed it tonight by deleting a windows update named KB973879

The computer was even crashing when I tried to remove hardware safely using the icon in the taskbar

I hope this solves your problem

Well is seems you are not the only one with this problem. I have a Dell Studio 1737, I have 4 different usb ports and none of them works right. I even go to safely remove hardware. And as soon as it is click on my computer does a series of beeps and then goes to the blue screen. In every one of the usb ports. I have contacted Dell as my laptop is still under warranty. Well she went and took control of my laptop and removed the updates (the ones that someone has listed are gone). And it still is doing it. I would love to know what is causing it. Because I am doing it the right way. The only thing I can read in the blue screen is the BIOS settings and memory dump. When windows checks for errors due to the shut down it comes up with
C:/Windows.Memory.DMP. Whatever that is. Anyway I have no luck getting this fixed. I read a post on best buys website, about a driver for the blue screen of death. But it was for the web cam. Sounds to me like something is messed up on some driver somewhere. Just wanted to let ya know your not alone on this issue.

I am not seeing the update anywhere in my installed programs list when I access my control panel. It happened again after I tried safely removing my iPod from my computer, as well. I might just call Dell tomorrow and see what they can do about it.
