Cant save or open .doc documents

Hey I have Microsoft Works Word Processor 2007 and I cant save or open documents using .doc (Word document 97-2003) format. When I try to either save or open a document I just get a message saying the file format may not be supported by any of the installed converters or the file maybe corrupt. I used to be able to do this before but all of a sudden it has stopped working. Can anyone help me please?
