results from Panda Scan
infected - 202
disinfected - 16

I go through all the steps and get to the point of rebooting in normal mode. Then I reconnect to the internet in order to do the Panda Scan (It still won't open the TrendMicro Housecall page). My home page is back to google.com which is what it is supposed to be. However after staying connected for a minute or two everything goes screwy again. Homepage is changed back to "about:blank"

OK, we need to kill that service before the rest of the "ick" will go.

First we disable it:

Click on Start, then Run and type in services.msc.
- Locate and double click on Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper.
- Set the Startup type: to Disabled, click Apply.
- Click on Stop and OK your way out.

Then we delete it:

Click Start >Run > type cmd > OK

When the Command prompt comes up type or paste in this command and press enter:

sc GetKeyName "Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper"

It will give the a name for the service.

Agan in the Command Prompt type sc delete space and then copy the name you got from the 1st command. Press enter.
You should get a success message.

If not, then the key name has some character which sc cannot translate. Let me know.

Then we want to go through the fix again: disconnect from the 'net, run CWShredder & About:Buster...etc etc etc

The name could not be retyped. It is different characters other than the alphabet.
I don't know how to do a copy and paste from the command prompt. I will attach a screen shot.

Let's try this one.... thanks to Metallica if it works. If it doesn't then it's my fault. :tazz:

Copy the contents of the quote box to Notepad.
Name the file Bye.vbs
Save as Type : All files

Double click on Bye.vbs to run it. You'll get an already stopped message and then another message box saying Done!

strComputer = "."
Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:" _
  & "{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" & strComputer & "\root\cimv2")
Set colListOfServices = objWMIService.ExecQuery _
("Select * from Win32_Service Where DisplayName = 'Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper'")
For Each objService in colListOfServices
If objService.State = "Stopped" then
MsgBox "Stopped Already"
Else
objService.StopService()
MsgBox "Service Stopped"

End IF
  objService.Delete()

Next

MsgBox "Done"

If you then run Services.msc you should no longer see the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper Service on the list.

I have to get a second opinion on this one. I have no clue why this won't die!

Don't worry we'll get this figured out!

OK, here we go.... Thanks bananafanafo!!

do it exactly as specified.

Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the below services:

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper (or possible this: 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I)

*NOTE* Make sure to disable the one with HELPER in the name because there may be legitimate services by similar name.

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.

Run HiJackThis. Click on "None of the above, just start the program". Now, click on the "Config" button (bottom right), then click on "Misc Tools", then click on "Delete an NT Service" a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (copy and paste):

11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I

*NOTE* Make sure there is a SPACE before the first "1" when entered into that field otherwise it may not work.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES.

Then proceed with the fix as we've been doing it.

Croos your fingers.

I think I may have it fixed. I've been trying to figure out how to analyze the logs on my own.

I went through the windows folder and the system32 folder and sorted out all the .exe files that looked like they had radomly generated, unintelligable names. If it did not show a company name and it had a recent creation date (2 months or less) I deleted it. 195 files in all.

By the way to anyone else reading this post I would not recommend that. (did I say I was desperate?) You could accidently delete something important.

I had to fix some of them through Hijackthis before I could delete them.

I then ran all the fixes and everything looks clean to me. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I know the pop ups have stopped and my home page and favorites are back where they should be. :tazz:

Please let me know if this looks clean.........

Thanks so much for your help. I made a donation (my paypal name is Brownmarketing). It's not a lot but I can't afford much. I wish I could do more because you helped so much.

I am going to try and learn how to analyze the Hijack This logs though so I can help others (and myself).

You're very welcome. And thank you so much for your generous donation.

Congrats on becoming a Geek in Training! We need all the help we can get.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.
