Hello,

Kaspersky will scan emails automaticlly if you store them on your computer. So there is nothing to worry about there.

Also, most online email accounts check for virus's in email attachments as well.

hi jwang01;

i ran the kaspersky and as you predicted, nothing was found. i had trouble saving report and it didn't save, i couldn't retrieve.

so.... it looks like i am going to try installing the used hard drive and depending on what i find, it may take a few days to get back to you, or if i have a working os, perhaps later tonight. i have no idea what my friend had done with that hard drive; whether he wiped everything or left it as-is, or used the recovery cds. how do i find out what version of windows i have and if it's legal? you said we had a way to find out whether the copy of windows installed on there is legal and if it isn't, then i would have to wipe the drive and start over, because you can't help me on an illegally installed os. do i have that right?

thank you!

Hello,

That is correct. If there is a working OS on it, let me know and I will have you run a tool to make sure its a legit OS. :)

Hello,

I have to head north tomarrow to fix a roof on the cabin and will be without the internet for about a week. I have asked one of the other staff here to jump in and give you a hand. :)

i am hoping to switch to the other hard drive soon, but it looks as though it won't be before the end of the weekend. not sure what to do, but i guess i will post every 3 days to say i'm still here and please keep this thread open. i am extremely busy the next few weeks, so internet is not high on my priority list, but fixing the computer still is. so thanks to whoever is going to step in here while you are gone, jwang01. have a good trip!

hello; checking in. still didn't switch out the hard drive; kinda chicken, having never done it.

i do have a question. are all hard drives interchangeable on all boxes? i do have another box that the hard drive went bad on, and i would rather use it, but i don't think my emachine recovery cds will work on that box with whatever processor it has. so i guess i'm stuck putting it in this box. now to find the time and the courage!

avira guard is doing a good job of keeping me able to go online - thanks so much for that, jwang01! i will post again in a couple of days.

Hello,

I am back and will continue helping you. If your other computer is not a E-machine, your recovery cd's will not work. Keep me updated. :)

hi jwang01; i hope your trip was good! thank you for sticking with me through all of this.

as you can see i have done nothing. i am busy planting, and wrapping up the school year. sorry i have not been here more.

i have several questions....
based on the tests we ran, you thought that what is wrong with my computer might not be a malware problem. may i ask what you think it is instead, and if you think there is some other way to deal with it rather than switching the hard drive, and if so, what? is killing this hard drive and then resetting the bios an option, and did we ever find out if recovery cds would still work on a drive that has been killed with the zeros or a drive kill program? just wanting to know all of my options. :)

still kinda scared about taking the box apart and switching drives to one that may not be a legal install or worse. do i need one of those bracelets to ground myself when i go inside the box, or just touch some metal? i am going out of town sunday and won't be back until tuesday night.

can you tell that i am a worrier? :) :)

Hello,

I never got any word on what killing that drive will do. Thats why I think switching it out is the best way to go now and see what happens there.

When the case is open, just touch something medal. :)
