I have been facing the same issue since 5-6 months as like my friend 'vidyutraka' is suffering from...
everything that he have stated is true with me
I have Dell XPS m1530 laptop. My dvd drive won't even read CD disk as well as DVD disks. When I insert DVD disk, sometimes it notice it as a blank disk. It is not even reading Official DVD disks of DELL drivers.

when I did a little search, when I found, that the same occurs only in most of DELL systems.

I have tried everything listed above.

1. in regestry, there are no upper as well as lower keys to delete
2. downloaded the latest drivers from the DELL website.
3. Uninstall the drivers from device manager and rebooted
4. tried CDGONE but no use.
5. In CMD, typed 'gencon stack gencdrom' and pressed enter. It said, 'devcon' is not a proper command.
6. Went to 'support.microsoft.com/kb/314060' and run 'FixIt'.. but no results.

Please help me out from this situation.

Sounds like you have done all the detective work and the most logical conclusion at this time would be a failed drive.
If the laptop is still under warranty have it replaced under warranty.
If not under warranty then we can research the price for a replacement.

Thank you for replies guys...

To my unluck..., my warrenty has been expired...

I did try both the versions of bios... but no result...
I even tried to reinstall chipset drivers to check if that work.... but no output...

At some point I thought... the laser must be damaged
whenever I insert any other DVD disk... it shows it blank...

Irony is.... the drive accepts Vista OS DVD (which indicates that it's working)... but not enything else...
which gives the conclusion that the Drive laser is fine...

Any help mates...

Sounds like then you would be looking at a faulty cable or controller on your laptop.

Not knowing what other kind of disks I couldn't tell you.
Are they retail disk or burned copies?
Your first post said it wouldn't read the Dell disk and then later you said it would read a vista disk.
Sounds to me like it is a controller problem or the eye is failing.
Most likely a controller since it works fine in your brothers system.
Did you try the other disks in your brothers systems to make syre they worked also?

Thank you your reply..

I have retail version windows vista disk which my drive reads.... but I does not read other original disks like DELL drivers disk, Microsoft works 9, roxio, or any burned disks...

I followed your suggestion...
I attached it to my brothers laptop, turns out it is reading DELL driver disk and some video disks... but not any burned data disks...
It is really frustrating... that I tried a lot to resolve the issue from my side...... but not able to do so...

If it's not reading any burned disks when connected to two different laptops, sounds like the problem is a flaky/bad drive.

Burned disks is a very wide statement as it will depend on what is burned and if the correct codecs for that type of data is loaded on the system you are using.
Have you tried the disks on another system with a known working cdrom drive?
I still believe the issue is a controller issue with your laptop.

thank you for reply...

I have burned data disk using Nero 7, but not even mine but also other CD-DVD drives are unable to read it...

Can it be a laser issue....? b'coz it reads OS disks (Dell Drivers disks in my brother's laptop) but not others...

What kind of data are you burning?
By OS disk from Dell do you mean the disk that came with the Dell system?

yes, it is the OS disk that came along with dell,

I tried another troubleshoot to see if that work...
I reinstalled Vista last night to check if it works
but now, it is reading not only OS but also Dell drivers disk and Dell utility disk...., not any other disk, even though it is a original copy of a game or a movie or a software...
