My computer just opened a window that said: "the instruction at 0x102404fa referenced memory at 0x80000004 the memory could not be read" I clicked cancel and nothing happened. I'm not sure if this is related but I though I should let you know.

Hi knichols05,

Your system files are modified by TDSS rootkit. Let's try to fix it.

Step 1

Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.

  • Extract the file and run it.
  • Once completed it will create a log in the root directory (usually C:\).
  • Please post the contents of that log in your next reply.

Step 2

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :OTL

    :Files
    c:\windows\system32\user32.dll|c:\windows\$hf_mig$\KB890859\SP2QFE\user32.dll /replace

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Post the log it produces in your next reply.

Step 3

Run GMER Rootkit Scanner.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.
  • Double click GMER.exe.
    Posted Image
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
      Posted Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt"
  • Save the log where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Please copy and paste the report into your Post.

Step 4

Please make sure you include the following items:
  • TDSSKiller log
  • OTL log
  • GMER log
It would be helpful if you could post each log in separate post

Ok, I think I'm still having the redirect problem a little.
Pages on google open really slowly and eventually redirect
I got a redirected page from wikipedia- something which hasn't happened before.

Hi knichols05,

You did great job and we are on good way. We have disinfected some system files but not all. Let's continue...

Step 1

Run ComboFix.

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you don't know how to disable them then just continue on.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt log in your next reply.

Step 2

Rerun OTL. Paste this in the custom scan box:

/md5start
ws2_32.dll
/md5stop

Click Run Scan button and post that log.

Step 3

Please make sure you include the following items:
  • Combofix log
  • OTL log
It would be helpful if you could post each log in separate post

Hi knichols05,

Step 1

  • Make sure to use Internet Explorer for this
  • Please go to virustotal.com FREE on-line scan service
  • Copy and paste the following file paths (one by one) into the "Suspicious files to scan" box on the top of the page:

    • c:\windows\system32\user32.dll
    • c:\windows\system32\ws2_32.dll
  • Click on the Upload button
  • If a pop-up appears saying the file has been scanned already, please select the ReScan button.
  • Once the Scan is completed, click on the "Copy to Clipboard" button. This will copy the link of the report into the Clipboard.
  • Paste the contents of the Clipboard in your next reply.

Step 2

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop.
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file, then on Start and allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, chose the Complete Scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow Posted Image at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look and see if you can click the following icon next to the files found:
    Posted Image
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    Posted Image
  • This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer to allow files that were in use to be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.
NOTE: During the scan, a pop-up window will open asking for full version purchase. Simply close the window by clicking on X in upper right corner.Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop.

Step 3

Please make sure you include the following items:
  • VirSCAN logs (you should have two logs for two files)
  • Dr.Web log
It would be helpful if you could post each log in separate post

Hey, the link for step number two doesn't take me to virustotal.com, it sends me to a site called virscan.org, which doesn't load.
Could you tell me which one I should go to?
*virscan.org doesn't seem to exist so I'll try my luck with virustotal.com.

Hi knichols05

Sorry for that. My mistake. I noticed that virscan does not work but I did not change link. Here is the new Step 1 for you.

Step 1

  • Make sure to use Internet Explorer for this
  • Please go to virustotal.com FREE on-line scan service
  • Copy and paste the following file paths (one by one) into the "Upload a file" box on the page:

    • c:\windows\system32\user32.dll
    • c:\windows\system32\ws2_32.dll
  • Click on the Send file button
  • If a pop-up appears saying the file has been scanned already, please select the Reanalyse file now button.
  • Once the Scan is completed, click on the "Copy to Clipboard" button. This will copy the link of the report into the Clipboard.
  • Paste the contents of the Clipboard in your next reply.

If you already did as I described above (especially Reanalyse file now) please continue to Step 2
