Press Windows Logo key + Pause Break key

System Properties window should pop up.

Under the Advanced tab click on Error reporting and ensure that Enable error reporting is checked, also click on Choose Programs and ensure that All programs is checked.

Come back and tell me what you found.

Under the Advanced tab I found Enable error reporting checked, also under Choose Programs I found All programs checked.

Hello again Far From Geek,

Here are my thoughts on this:

Malware can cause this problem so that was the first port of call.

There were some residues of malware on your machine which we removed. I am not seeing malware any more. Nevertheless malware can leave behind corrupt files or registry entries. However you can boot this machine normally so, while I am not a tech, my thought is/was that there was a problem with the registry rather than a corrupt driver. You have used the fix for that:

Download SafeBootKeyRepair by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click to run
  • Follow the prompts
  • Post the log it produces back here
already though. Perhaps you could run it again just in case.

You have also (as I understand it) carried out a Repair Install which should have corrected a corrupt driver problem if that was the cause.

My next thought was that there might be some sort of conflict going on... hence the request to uninstall Comodo. No luck there either it seems. You could try uninstalling Avast and see if that makes a difference. Reinstall it afterwards. :)

We have also investigated the possibility of the settings being incorrect for error reporting. Again everything seems in order.

Not much left... perhaps you could check that everything is clean in your computer, no dust etc. and that your machines ram is firmly in it's slots (I think you might have done that too but no harm in checking).

Might be worth giving chkdsk a run.

Go to Windows XP chkdsk for some helpful instructions.

Also let's do this:

It is a pretty big download but is very useful at detecting\cleaning rootkits or whatever it finds.

Please click here to download VRT Tool by Kaspersky.
  • Save it to your desktop
  • Double click the setup file to run it
  • Accept the agreement
  • A pop up window will appear.
  • On the Autoscan panel check all items
  • Click on Start Scan
  • When finished (this can take some time... just be patient and let it do its job) click the Report button
  • Click the + button left top to expand the critical events
  • Highlight Ctrl A and copy Ctrl C
  • Save to Notepad Ctrl V
Copy and past the report back here.

Click exit to uninstall Kaspersky VRT. Click yes to the prompts to complete the process.

Note: This tool will self uninstall when you click Exit so please save the log before closing it.

Oh and another thought:

Right click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager > expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and right click on Primary IDE Controller and select Update Driver.

Should have been covered in your Repair Installation but you never know...

I went through every thing listed:

SafeBootKeyRepair (twice, logs are listed below) = Still no safe mode
Uninstalled avast = Still no safe mode
Cleaned computer & ram is firmly seated = Still no safe mode
Chkdsk = It did not find any issues - Still no safe mode
VRT Tool by Kaspersky (log is listed below) = It did not find any issues - Still no safe mode
Update Primary IDE Controller = Wizard did not find a better match than the already installed

Hello Far From Geek,

After a bit of research I found another user with a problem that was opposite to yours but as it had to do with Safe Mode I am wondering if your machine might have something set incorrectly in the same area.

Right click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties". Under the "Advanced" tab, in the "Startup and Recovery" section, click on the "Settings" button. In the resulting window, click on the "Edit" button...a notepad window will open (boot.ini).

Copy the contents of that window and paste it back here.

I am not a tech but that looks perfectly fine to me.

Next thought... I wonder whether it is something to do with how you are attempting to access Safe Mode.

Followed the link and was booting to safe mode correctly. Tried using the F5 key also but still got safe mode BSOD. Followed the Accessories thing to get the user accounts to require a password. The display however was different than what the tutorial was describing but I got the admin account to require a password but still ended up with the BSOD. At this point I figured what the heck and tried the configuration utility method and figured it would end up as an endless boot the the BSOD and I was correct. Now the computer only boots to the same 0xa BSOD.

Further to my last post.

Looking at your post again I think you are saying that now your machine will only boot to the blue screen and nothing else.

If I am right (and actually it would be same thing if your computer was in an endless loop which can happen when you go the msconfig way) then I think your best bet is another Repair Install.

Please go to Windows Repair to learn how to undertake Windows Repair Install.

You will not lose data on your computer using this process.

It is a way to repair your operating system.

You will lose your Windows Updates and your drivers will revert to the original version but you can catch up on these.

Tell me if you run into problems. :)

I tried the repair install twice and each time when the system would reboot it came back with the 0xA BSOD. I did the destructive install. I wiped the harddrive with Western Digitals tool (my HDD is a Western Digital) by writing zeros to the full drive and did a clean install. I am in the process right now of updating XP (doing them in batches). Safe mode is back and I have been checking after every batch just to see if maybe any of the updates may bring back the 0xa BSOD. So far so good.

Interesting... something the reformat has removed. :)

I am back and the issue has been resolved. I found that InCD 4 was the culprit. After installing it and booting to safe mode the 0xA BSOD appeared. I tried to uninstall it but could not find it in add/remove programs and also could not find an uninstall option in the program file. So I did a search on the g2g site and found a thread that someone had the same issue uninstalling InCD 4. They had a link to Nero’s site for a cleaning tool and that did the trick. InCD 4 was uninstalled and I was able to boot to safe mode again. This 0xA BSOD was very interesting issue.
