a note for anyone else interested in this problem.
Good news ... sound completely works
Went to Start->control panel->Hardware and Sound->Sound->Manage audio devices
There were 2 speakers (both Microsoft HD Audio Devices) - I had found something on the internet about problems if had 2 speakers so :
I uninstalled/disabled one of the speakers. First, kept the speaker initially marked as the default. No joy.
Next, I changed the default to the 2nd speaker and uninstalled/disabled the first speaker ... all sounds worked.
Tried an audio CD and sound was good.
Tried DVD ... worked
So, bottom line am happy but will still contact MSI re win7 audio driver but not sure I need it now - if they have one, I'll decide whether to do anything when it's working now.

It would probably be a good ideal to get it if they have it. Never hurts to be safe.
