I have a brand new build of a system running Windows 7 64 bit. Everything seems to be working pretty good except for occasional system lock ups. When it happens, the whole system just freezes and I can't do anything except hit the reset or power button. I'd like some advice on the best way to troubleshoot this because all the various parts are still inside the return window. It seems like it might be video related because I can get it to consistently lock up if I try and use video editing software. Also, it locks up if I try and transfer a video file from my video camera to the computer. Other than that, the lock ups seem kinda random. For example, it locked up when starting iTunes once but other times it was fine. On occasion it just locks up when I am not doing anything.
If anyone has any suggestions on how I can troubleshoot this, please let me know. I've ran memtest86 and found no errors with the memory.
I'm not sure what else to try at this point.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

How much memory do you have installed?

There may be no errors, but if you are running 64bit, then I would recommend at least 2G of memory installed.

Please follow the steps below to enter the Event Viewer program in Vista\Win7. This will give me more information into what is causing your issue. You can get to Event viewer two ways and I will post both for you.

Method One

• Go to
• Start
• In the Search box type in Event Viewer in the search box and press Enter
• From this point you can follow from step four from the below method as they will be the same.
Method Two

• Go to Start
• Right click on the Computer Icon and select Manage
• Navigate to the Event Viewer, You will be prompted to accept the action you are going to perform. Click continue
• On the left window pane click on Local and then expand the Windows entry. This will allow you to see every error for the past 24 hours as well as the last 7 days in the right window pane.
• Look for the ones that correspond to the times that your issue occurred.
• If any are found please double click and expand the error. This will open and give you more information on the error.
• Please include that in your next reply.

rshaffer61, thanks for your reply. The event viewer on my system appear a little different than you describe. Underneath the Event View section I don't see "Local". The four options I have are Custom View, Windows Logs, Applications and Services Logs, and Subscriptions. If I open up the Windows Logs, and then open up the System area I see a "Critical" and and "Error" that corresponds to the last lock up. Unfortunately I don't see much information given with these errors:

Critical:
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

I think this has been resolved. Even though the memtest86 reported no errors with my system memory, I decided to try new memory anyway. After replacing my OCZ memory with Corsair, it stopped locking up on me. I've been running for about a month now with no lock ups.
