Gigantic RTF files in Word 2003

Hi, I used to save my word documents in RTF format, usind word "save as". My old documents then became much smaller.
I didn't needed to do it for a while so I was very surprised yesterday when I saved a word doc (1 page 160 ko) as RTF and try to send it via email to realise that it was now 6MO in RTF.
Does anyone know what's happened?
