OK the options at this point are very few.
Since you wiped the drive and reinstalled from the original Gateway installation disks and it doesn't work, have you checked the bios in the onboard peripherals to make sure it is enabled?
If it is then it may just be a coincidence and the nic has failed.
Normally the motherboard chipset driver will install all onboard items like sound, video and nic with no problem.

To enter your BIOS

Reboot the system and at the first post screen (where it is counting up memory) start tapping the DEL button
This will enter you into the Bios\Cmos area. Some systems use a different key to enter it. Check the bottom of the first screen to see how to enter Bios, Cmos or Setup area.
Find the Advanced or On board peripherals area and click Enter
Look for Nic or Lan or Network and highlight that click Enter
Now highlight it if disabled and follow the directions on the bottom of the screen on how to modify it and change it to Enabled.
Once that is done then click F10 to Save and Exit
You will prompted to enter Y to verify Save and Exit. Click Y and the system will now reboot with the new settings.

The other option is to have your boss contact Gateway and request a new set of recovery disks or ask them about the driver for the nic. They should be able to supply him with a direct link to the download and hopefully a newer version of the driver.

Okay, I downloaded the two, transferred them to the desktop on the computer, then went to update the driver

Just a thought, when you transfered the .exe files to your desktop did you double click and run them ?.
