My husband purchased a laptop for Christmas for me. I have a wireless router, but haven't been able to make a secured network to connect my desktop pc & my laptop. I have XP on the desktop & Windows 7 on the laptop. Not sure what I need to do since they're running different versions of Windows. I'm not sure which steps I need to take to get my wireless network secure. Thanks.

The version of Windows is irrelevant.

Secure the network by logging into the router direct. Your router may have come with a software CD that will do it for you, if not you'll have to log in. All the details you need should be in the paraphernalia that came with it.
