virus stopped firewall

Hi,

I have a friend's laptop that had viruses and they couldn't get online. I ran Malware Bytes and removed the viruses and now they can get online and all looked ok. Except, I can't turn on the firewall or can't connect to windows update, I have tried all the usual suggestions that are on the net but cannot get it working. I ran Hijack this and attached is the logfile, I was hoping people may be able to help me with this file.

The laptop is an acer extensa 5620z running vista home premium.
