It seems to have fixed the block error and there was no beep complaint this time. We are still getting the paging error but it refers to a different drive. Let's see which.

Copy the following line:

reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Hardware\Devicemap /s > \jumk.txt

Open a Command window (Start, Run, cmd, OK) then right click and select Paste or Edit, Paste. Hit Enter.

notepad \junk.txt

Copy and Paste the result from notepad.

How is it running by the way? Is the speed still low?

Do you have a blank disk in a cd or dvd drive? Is there a usb drive plugged in?

the internet seems to load about 90 percent of the page and then takes a bit to get the final little bit. also it takes forever to get email in outlook from my charter account. sometimes it gives an error.

I do have a cd drive and there is three USB external HDD's plugged in.

i misread your post, there is not a blank cd in the drive.

Oops - early here.

Let's do it over with a few additions.

Copy the following line:

reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Hardware\Devicemap /s > \junk.txt

Open a Command window (Start, Run, cmd, OK) then right click and select Paste or Edit, Paste. Hit Enter.

ping -n 30 f1.com >> \junk.txt

netstat -s >> \junk.txt

notepad \junk.txt

I use 2 spaces in the code box so you can see where one space goes.

Both. What we are doing is:

reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Hardware\Devicemap /s > \junk.txt

ping -n 30 f1.com >> \junk.txt

netstat -s >> \junk.txt

notepad \junk.txt

Perfect.

Run the disk check on drive L and see if that stops the paging error we are getting.

Copy the text in the code box by highlighting and Ctrl + c

then run OTL and Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste (ctrl +v) the text. Verify that you got it all and Then click the Run Fix button at the top
Let the program run unhindered, OTL will reboot the PC when it is done. Save the log and copy and paste it to a reply.

Try getting the AdBlock Plus add-on for Firefox and see if that helps. Also download and run Speedy Fox.
http://www.crystalidea.com/speedyfox.

Is there any difference between Firefox and IE? (You are out of date on IE by the way.)

In Firefox: Go to http://www.speedtest.net/

Wait 5 or 10 seconds for it to select the closest test server and then Begin Test. When it finishes it will display your download, upload and ping results. What do you see? Press the Copy Forum Link button

Go to a Reply and Ctrl + V. That will paste a copy of your results into the reply tho it won't look like it until after you Reply or hit Preview.

Start, Programs, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Firefox (Safe mode), Go to http://www.speedtest.net/

Repeat.

Run IE.

Repeat.

Charter is a cable company so you share bandwidth with all of the other users. Try running the test at different times during the day when fewer people might be on and see if the speed varies considerably.

This looks like a Duplex mismatch on your router to PC connection. Your Ethernet connection on the PC is probably set to Full Duplex. That would cause the router which is almost certainly set to AutoNegotiate to set up at Half Duplex. See:

http://www.oit.umn.e...ws-xp/index.htm

for instructions on how to set the Network Interface Card (NIC) to AutoNegotiate.

It looks as though it was already set to that. am I supposed to check under local area connection or the wireless connections? the Local area connection was already set. and I do not see any half or full options under the wireless . the reason I ask is I use a wiresless router for the internet here. I checked each setting under the LAN and the fastest I got was 1.22 MB. that was with it set on 100baseTX
