OTL did not make a log - on restart it opened again but with no log. I re ran it with the same result. It did delete a few programs, though i dont know if it did anything for the acid pro stuff - turns out my brother downloaded that onto this machine without my knowledge -

avast definitions still wont update, still cannot open security center - I have not yet tried to re install my video card drivers ( had a problem with this before too ). Shockwave flash keeps crashing randomly.

To Start Security Center:

• Go to Administrative Tools > Services
• highlight Security Center
• right-click > properties
• change the Startup Type to Automatic
• start the service.

For the security center stuff, I did as requested - the service was already set to automatic and started - I stoped then restarted. Balloon comes up from the task bar as usual but I cannot get into the security center itself.

re installed avast and I still have the same problem - wont update the program or the definitions.

See if this makes a difference:

Temporarily disable the Windows Management Instrumentation Service,

• Go to Start > Run > type: services.msc and in there find/stop Windows Management Instrumentation Service.
• Next delete the repository folder located at C:\windows\system32\wbem\repository.
• Restart the Windows Management Instrumentation service, then wait while the repository folder is being re-created (can take a bit of time).
• Restart the computer.

Come back and tell me if that has made any difference.
