That is the one area that no antivirus checks out funnily enough..

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :)

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [CLEARALLRESTOREPOINTS]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /Uninstall

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Posted Image Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application.

Upgrading Java:
  • Go to this site and click Do I have Java
  • It will check your current version and then offer to update to the latest version

SPRING CLEAN

Download and run Puran Disc Defragmenter
For the first run I would recommend a boot defrag and disk check

Posted Image

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Posted Image Malwarebytes. Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?
Keep safe

Well...I am sad to say the virus is back. Not sure what happened, but this thing is just unbelievable. At this point, I have not yet run the clean up process you recommended.

Did I miss a step or is this thing really capable of hiding from all of those scans? I almost think I need to reload the OS at this point. What would you suggest?

OK as you have not uninstalled the programmes lets get straight back to work, we will use an updated aswMBR though - are you getting redirected again ? Or is there something else happening ?

Are any other of your computers experiencing the same problem ?

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.

Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it

Click the "Scan" button to start scan
Posted Image

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply
Posted Image

Then

  • |R|un OTL.
  • Select All Users
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    volsnap.*
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    Userinit.exe
    svchost.exe
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /rs
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Post both logs

Thanks for re-opening...I ran both scans that you suggested and will post below. However, OTL did not generate an Extras file this time. Not sure why.

I'll re-run and post the log. The symptoms are the same as before. When you launch the browser, you get a grey page that says the page is not compatible with the browser and then there is an update button under it. If you try to go to any web sites, you just keep getting that same page. But, then if you try again later, you'll be able to go to most sites, but not the Microsoft update site. That's the only visible symptoms. Who knows if it is logging keystrokes or anything else. I'll post the scan results shortly. Thanks

This one went better than last time. I was able to download an update for Combofix and I was able to download and install Window's Recovery console. Hopefully this allowed the program to do more than it did last time. Here's the log:

It happens in all browsers or anything that attempts to access a webpage. For example, we had Avast up and running and I guess they have a frame that advertises their upgrade. It's a webpage embedded in the Avast application and the virus page was showing there too (all while Avast was proclaiming the system secured at the top of the window -- it was kind of funny).

Anyway,it's like this on both computers that are infected. Here's how everything is setup. We have a Motorola Digital Voice DSL modem from our service provider. That is plugged into a Cisco Linksys Wireless Router. My computer is directly connected to the router. The other 3 computers have a wireless adapter and are hooking up by wireless. Both of the computers with the virus are on wireless.

The third computer on wireless is an older Windows XP system but so far has no sign of the virus. As I mentioned before, the symptoms go away after awhile and then come back (we see the virus page once per day or every other day). If you open a browser and the virus page is there...in a couple of hours we can reopen the browser and use it normally (except for Microsoft's update page, of course). But, when the virus page comes up, we can't go anywhere.

What's the next step?

OK onward and upward

Next you must reset the router to its default configuration. This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router. Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds).

NEXT

First run the fixit attached
Unzip the programme to your desktop and then run

If that fails then try the following

  • To open a command prompt, click Start > All Programs > Accessories and then click command prompt
  • Copy and paste (or type) the following command in the command box box and then press ENTER:
    netsh winsock reset c:\resetlog.txt
  • Reboot the computer.
  • In next reply please post content of the file c:\resetlog.txt

IF THE PROBLEM PERSISTS

Download AVP Tool

First we will run a virus scan

On the first tab select all elements down to and including Computer and then select start scan
Once it has finished select report and post that.

Do not close AVPTool or it will self uninstall, if it does uninstall - then just rerun the setup file on your desktop

Now an analysis scan

Select the Manual Disinfection tab
Press the Gather System Information button
Once done Open the last report saved folder then attach the zip file to your next post zip
The file is located at C:\Users\your name\Desktop\Virus Removal Tool\setup_9.0.0.722_05.01.2011_20-34\LOG\avptool_sysinfo.zip

How do I know if this Microsoft Fix It has done what it is supposed to? When I click the installer, it goes through the install process and then I get a window that says This Microsoft Fixit has been processed. I did get a prompt to restart and it said changes would take place after start up. So it sounds positive.

Also, now that I have reset the router, I have a wide open wireless connection. I'm assuming I need to recreate the encrypted connection. When should I do this?

Also, I haven't done anything to the other infected computer yet. I've only been working on the original infected. Do I need to go through the whole process that you described earlier, start to finish, on the other computer as well?
